2010 Greek Awards and State of the Greek Community Address

This year’s Greek Awards and State of the Greek Community Address will be held on Wednesday, April 21st from 6:00-8:00pm in the Newcomb Hall Ballroom.

All chapters are encouraged to fill out the application packet online for this year’s Greek Awards in order to highlight their group’s achievements. Application packets are due by 5:00 on Wednesday, April 14th.

NPHC Elects 2010 – 2011 Executive Board

On March 20, the National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC) elected new officers for the coming academic year. The officers are as follows:

  • President: Ian McClenny (Alpha Phi Alpha)
  • Executive Vice President: Monica Anderson (Sigma Gamma Rho)
  • Administrative Vice President: Breyon Whittington (Zeta Phi Beta)

Congratulations to the new officers! The NPHC will elect the rest of the governing board in late April.

FOA Opportunity: Get Up to Speed on the Library

The U.Va. Library is ready to help you finish up the school year.  In a 30-minute session we’ll give you an overview of the Library system, demonstrate how to find materials in the Library, how to find scholarly resources, and discuss some basic tenants of doing research.  The program will satisfy the FOA for Health & Safety.

FOA Day – May 5, 2010

April 1st, 2010

The signing of the Fraternal Organization Agreement for the 2010-2011 academic year will occur on one day: May 5, 2010. This date was chosen as it is a Reading Day for the University and it is assumed that all chapter presidents will be able to review and sign the FOA during this time. The total time commitment will be no more than 20 minutes. To help encourage chapter president’s participation in FOA Day, free food and door prizes will be provided during the entire day. More information will be shared via email in the coming weeks. Please save the date!

Looking for an on-Grounds job where you can work in a high energy, team oriented environment? Join the fraternity & sorority life staff for the 2010 – 2011 academic year.

As a FSL Office Assistant, you will gain valuable experience while working to better the the fraternity and sorority community. This position is open to all UVA undergraduate students and employment will last from mid-August to mid-May. FSL Office Assistants will work approximately 10 hours per week.

  • held their spring philanthropy, a Blend-Off competition, in March. The event raised money for the Ronald McDonald House.

Delta Delta Delta

  • will host a trunk show on Saturday April 10th for philanthropy St. Jude’s Children Hospital at the Delta Delta Delta sorority house, all are welcome!

Tri Sigma

Kappa Alpha Theta

  • will hold a Theta Pancake Breakfast on April 10th.  Proceeds will go to CASA, the Court Appointed Special Advocates program, which works to stop child abuse and neglect.

Zeta Tau Alpha

  • hosted their annual ZTA Run for Life on March 27th where 920 runners, ages 8 to 87, raised over $20,000 for the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Research Fund and the UVA Breast Cancer Research Center.  Runners included community members, breast cancer survivors, and others personally affected by the loss of a loved one to breast cancer.  The event was particularly poignant for “Peggy’s Pals” of the Gamma Nu chapter. ‘Peggy’s Pals’ was formed by a group of 1977 Gamma Nu alumnae who participated in the race in memory of their fraternity sister Peggy Hardy who recently passed away from the disease. ‘Peggy’s Pals’ raised over $1800 for the cause.  Also of note, the brothers of Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity ran in memory of an aunt of one of their new brothers.  It was an event that would make anyone proud to be a sister of Zeta Tau Alpha and it reminded everyone of the importance of sisterhood and charity.
  • will be travelling to George Mason University on April 5th for Zeta Day. This event brings together the Zetas from all around Virginia once a year to teach important lessons such as how Zeta can help us in the future.
  • will initiate our 40 new members on April 11, 2010 in the University chapel. This ceremony marks the official reception of our new members into our Fraternity. This is a very special ceremony that cements the bonds of sisterhood that have been forming since bid day.

Sigma Psi Zeta

  • celebrated its 16th anniversary on March 23rd. To commemorate this occasion, the sister co-hosted a party at a DC club with the Sigmas of George Washington University on Friday, March 26.
  • will be hosting a domestic violence awareness workshop in the first annual PURSUIT Conference on Saturday, April 17.
  • will hold its annual VOICES event on Friday, April 23rd. Sigma Psi Zeta has been holding VOICES every spring semester since 2004 to take part in the month long celebration of Asian / Pacific American Heritage Month (APAHM). We bring different multicultural acts to the University in the hopes of spreading cultural awareness, celebrating diversity, and ultimately, bringing a ‘voice’ to our Asian heritage.
  • volunteered at the Cherry Blossom Festival in Washington, DC on Saturday, March 27th.

Alpha Phi

  • congratulates all Alpha Phis that made the Dean’s List this semester.
  • will be celebrating their annual Parents Formal and Red Dress Brunch this April at the Farmington Country Club.

Sigma Kappa

  • held their second annual Violet Gala on February 20th.  This year’s event raised over $9,000 for Alzheimer’s research.  The night included a live band, a silent auction, and guest speaker, Karen Rose, a University Nursing School professor who has done Alzheimer’s research.
  • congratulates Lindsay Hardenbergh who was named ACC Player of the Week for Women’s Tennis this past January. Lindsay is also currently ranked #38 in the country for singles and #53 in doubles.
  • congratulates Susie Ranney who recently received a full academic scholarship to the University of Virginia’s Graduate School of Architecture.
  • will be co-hosting with Sigma Pi Hoos in Synch, a lip syncing contest to raise money for Alzheimer’s Research.  The event will be held at Sigma Pi.

Gamma Phi Beta

  • Celebrated our national Day of Service by tutoring CHS students involved in our local philanthropy, the I Have a Dream Foundation, and hosting a girls night at the sorority house for them!
  • Bonded over laughter yoga at our sorority-wide retreat this month.
  • Applauds our sisters’ outstanding volunteer work with Alternative Spring Break in Brazil, Dominican Republic and Trinidad.
  • Celebrated Big Sis Week and welcomes our wonderful new pledge class!

Kappa Alpha

  • welcome their 18 new brothers
  • were awarded with placement on the Kappa Alpha Order National Honor Role for the 2010 year due to the chapter’s cumulative GPA of 3.32.
  • hosted the 25th annual Lee Mallette Memorial Lacrosse Tournament on March 27th.  Proceeds this year will benefit the University of Virginia Children’s Hospital by helping contribute to the construction of the Barry and Bill Battle Building which will bring cutting edge healthcare solutions to its patients. To celebrate the 25th anniversary several changes have been made to the tournament format, including adding girls teams for the first time and securing sponsorships from several national lacrosse companies. Delta Zeta

  • hosted a karaoke event at Baja Bean on March 25th in honor of a fellow Delta Zeta from Virginia Tech, Emily Dao. Emily passed away last year from colon cancer and we are having this event to raise money for cancer research in her honor.
  • plan to participate in Sigma Chi’s philanthropy Derby Days, which raises money for the Children’s Miracle Network. Delta Zeta has won the Derby Days competition for the last three years and has had the privilege of co-signing the check to the Children’s Miracle Network.

Phi Psi

  • will hold their 3rd annual Home Run Derby in Madbowl in Friday, April 30th.  The event will be benefitting victims in Haiti.

Foxfield Information Session & FOA Opportunity

CASE will be holding information session regarding the Foxfield Races on Wednesday, April 21 at 7:30pm in the Newcomb Theatre.  This event may satisfy the FOA requirement for EITHER Drugs/Alcohol OR Liability.

Inter-Greek Habitat for Humanity News!

The Inter-Greek Habitat for Humanity Steering Committee is excited to announce that seven new members from the ISC and IFC have been selected to join the committee.  This April we will continue to build upon the 10,000 dollars that was raised last semester by hosting a Flag Football Tournament for all the fraternities on April 16th at MadBowl Field at 3:30 PM.  Additionally, we are joining up with UVA Habitat to co-host a 5k on April 11th on Newcomb Plaza at 10 AM. All proceeds will be donated to the fourth Inter-Greek Habitat House. For more information, to make a donation, or to register for either events contact Catherine Bakewell (cmb3zx@virginia.edu) or Casey Woodward (csw3b@virginia.edu).
