Year End Report Due April 26

The Year End Report is an assessment of current goals, efforts, successes and areas of growth for your chapter. The information provided in this report will be used by the Office of the Dean of Students – Fraternity & Sorority Life to recognize and celebrate the achievements of fraternities and sororities in the spring semester 2013. Moreover, the information provided will prove critical in shaping future programs, initiatives and services.

Chapter presidents are asked to complete all sections of this report no later than April 26th, 2013. All responses should reflect achievements, activities, events, etc. from the Spring 2013 semester.

DEADLINE EXTENDED TO WEDNESDAY, APRIL 3 AT NOON

The 2013 Greek Awards are quickly approaching!  On Tuesday, April 23, the Office of the Dean of Students – Fraternity & Sorority Life will be hosting the 2013 Greek Awards Ceremony and State of the Greek Community Address to honor those chapters and individuals who have made outstanding accomplishments and significantly contributed to the betterment of the Greek community.  The event will feature an awards ceremony and annual State of the Greek Community presentation. The awards ceremony will take place in the Newcomb Theater and will be followed by a dessert reception in the lobby.

April FOA Deadlines

April 1st, 2013

Updated spring rosters are due April 1st: Both the electronic roster with notations on current members and a hard copy of the new member roster with signatures. If your chapter has no changes and no new members please still email Emily to let her know, so your chapter is accounted for. E-mail updated rosters to err5u@virginia.edu and bring in new member rosters to Emily in 171 Newcomb Hall.

The Year-End Report will be available online April 8, it is due April 26.

All 6 Educational Programs are due April 26. If you think your chapter is going to have a problem completing all 6 programs by this deadline you need to contact your FSL advisor and discuss your options.

Focus Group Opportunity: Fraternities, Sororities and Study Abroad

April 1st, 2013

Student Activities will be hosting 2 focus groups in the month of April to learn more about fraternity and sorority leaders’ perspective and perceptions on studying abroad at UVA.  The goal of these focus groups is to better understand the opportunities and barriers that exist for student organization leaders who are interested in studying abroad. All students are welcome to attend, regardless of whether or not you have studied abroad! Free food will be provided and each session will last no more than 90 minutes. To take part in a focus group, please RSVP to studentactivities@virginia.edu.

Focus Group 1: Thursday, April 11 | 12 – 1:30pm

Focus Group 2: Monday, April 15 | 530 – 7pm

FOA Day is May 1, 2013

FOA Day is Wednesday, May 1, 2013 (a University reading day).  More specific information regarding FOA Day will be shared in an email to chapter presidents in mid-April.  Please note that all FOA paperwork (including chapter rosters and 6 educational programs) must be completed prior to this date.  If chapters aren’t in compliance, the FOA will not be signed for the next year. Bamboo Policy

April 1st, 2013

As new leaders transition into their position and as we prepare for the arrival of spring weather, it’s important that you are aware of the regulations surrounding the use of bamboo in fraternity/sorority facilities. These guidelines were developed by the City of Charlottesville Fire Department/Fire Marshal.

Bamboo Guidelines
• Cut bamboo is not approved to be used for indoor decoration or construction
• Cut bamboo must be kept 20 feet from building and exit ways
• Any structure over 200 square feet or with a roof or a platform constructed of bamboo must be approved by either Neighborhood Development Services (City of Charlottesville) or the County Building Official (depending on location)
• Cut bamboo must be removed promptly after the event has ended
• All leaves must be removed from the cut bamboo before it can be used as a decorative material
• Note that these guidelines also apply to facilities in the County.

Requests need to be made at least 2 weeks prior to the desired program date.

University Career Services (UCS) will be accepting applications for financial assistance from students who have secured summer 2013 internships. Both the Parents Committee Internship Grants and the Larry Simpson Internship Scholarship provide funds to assist students in achieving their career-related goals.

The Parents Committee Internship Grants (PCIG) are merit-based and current 2nd and 3rd year students of all majors are eligible. Applicants must have secured an unpaid summer internship in an area of public service (i.e., civic engagement and public policy; economic and business development; education, both K-12 and lifelong learning; environment, both planned and natural; and health). This year we are pleased to offer grants of $3,000 each to 16 students! Grant recipients write a journal throughout the internship process, and via the University Career Services’ website, their experiences will be shared with the U.Va. community. The application deadline for the grants is noon Monday, April 1, 2013.

In addition to the grants, UCS coordinates the Larry Simpson Internship Scholarship. This scholarship is a $2,000 need and merit-based award available to a rising 4th year in the College of Arts and Sciences who has secured a summer internship in any career field.  This scholarship is generously sponsored by Betty Shotton, CLAS ’74 and honors Larry Simpson who served as the first director of U.Va.’s career services office from 1968-1998. The application deadline for the scholarship is noon Monday, April 8, 2013.
