Standards and Procedures for Fraternities and Sororities
The standards outlined below apply only to single-sex fraternities and sororities that are seeking affiliation under one of the 4 Greek Governing Councils at the University of Virginia (Inter-Fraternity Council, Inter-Sorority Council, National Pan-Hellenic Council, Multicultural Greek Council). Establishing or reactivating a fraternity or sorority at the University will occur in concert with the respective governing council and will occur in 3 phases: establishment, provisional phase, and full membership. Hazing
Through a generous gift from the Parents' Fund, the Office of Fraternity & Sorority Life supports a HAZING HOTLINE. You may call 243-4293 (HAZE) to report incidents of hazing, which will be handled discreetly and efficiently. For Parents
As a parent or family member, there is a lot you can do for your student during their fraternity or sorority experience. Ask your student about their chapter and new brothers or sisters. If risk management concerns you, please feel free to contact Fraternity & Sorority Life or the fraternity/sorority headquarters.
- Learn about the fraternity/sorority by visiting the chapter’s website and the official website of the fraternity/sorority headquarters.
- Review the fraternity/sorority mission, values, and tenants of membership.
- Encourage your student to take advantage of chapter services, leadership opportunities, and scholarships.
- Encourage your student to attend educational programs in the chapter and on the Grounds.
- Know the contact information for the chapter, big brother or big sister, fraternity/sorority Headquarters, and Fraternity & Sorority Life.
- Find out the details of the financial obligations of the fraternity/sorority.
- Encourage your student to take a leadership role in his/her chapter.
- Know the grade requirements for new and active members.
