General Faculty Council
Election Ballot - May 2009
The General Faculty Council (GFC) is conducting elections to fill vacated terms on the Council, and a referendum to approve changes to the General Faculty Council bylaws. All General Faculty may vote for At-Large Representatives and bylaws, in addition to voting for candidates in their specific constituency areas. The current elections are to fill vacated slots in the Health Professionals and Athletics areas, and to vote on bylaws changes.
Health Professionals:
This individual will represent the interests of the general faculty employed
in the area of health professionals and academic health sciences.
The councilor elected will serve from June 2009 - March 2011
Please vote for ONE of the candidates listed between Wednesday, June 3 and Tuesday, June 9, 2009.
Catherine Leslie, MD, Associate Professor of Clinical Medicine, Department of Psychiatry
"I have been on faculty since 1987 - 1st
as a Research Assistant Professor and then as an Assistant Professor (tenure
track), then as Assistant and now Associate Professor of Clinical Medicine
(part-time and not tenure track). I was one of the first female medical
faculty members to use the family leave act back in 1989 and one of the
first to use the part-time options. I have been a residency training
director and served on the Medical School Admissions Committee from 1999
till last spring. I think I could be an advocate for those of us who have
not taken the standard career path."
Larry Merkel, MD, PhD, Associate Professor, Department of Psychiatry and Neurobehavioral Sciences
"I have been on the faculty of UVA since 1990. I am in the clinical faculty, non-tenure track. I am very involved with the training of psychiatry residents and also teach a course in the Dept. of Anthropology, since I have a PhD in Anthropology as well. I have won departmental, medical school and national teaching awards and am presently about 50% teaching time. I am a member of the Academy of Distinguished Educators in the Medical School. I have devoted much of my career to teaching and improving the teaching environment. For these reasons I believe that I can be a valuable member of the General Faculty Council and will work to improve the teaching at the University and the status of non-tenured faculty."

Athletics:
This individual will represent the interests of the general faculty employed
in the area of athletics.
The councilor elected will serve from June 2009 - March 2011
Please vote for ONE of the candidates listed between Wednesday, June 3 and Tuesday, June 9, 2009.
Wendy Sue Sewack, Athletic Academic Coordinator, John Paul Jones Arena
"September 2009 will mark my sixth year as an academic coordinator in the
athletic academic affairs office. During my time here, I have also had the
opportunity to be involved as an summer instructor for the transition
program. I have seen firsthand positive changes that better the experience
and development of athletic faculty. Becoming a member of the general
faculty committee will provide continued support for the 10 year goals of
the athletic department as well continuing to foster positive relationships
on grounds."
Alexandra Kyser, Assistant Field Hockey Coach
"Athletics has been the center of my life since I decided to step on the athletic field at age 3. I was a student athlete at Michigan State University prior to becoming a faculty member at University of Virginia 3 years ago. I have been lucky enough to help the Virginia field hockey team grow and develop to levels of competition that in a few years we will be prepared to bring home our National Championship trophy. I have a passion for sports and a passion to teach field hockey to young student athletes. Being a new faculty member, I feel like I can relate to the students very easily as well as understand the viewpoint of faculty needs. If I were to be the representative for athletics in the GFC I feel like I would be a positive and useful liaison for both groups."

Bylaws Referendum:
The General Faculty Council has recently voted to amend the Bylaws, and they now require the approval of the constituency (all Non-Tenure-Track
Faculty and Senior Professional Research Staff members of the University
of Virginia). In this case, "approval" requires the affirmative vote of
two-thirds of those voting on the issue.
The existing Bylaws may be found at http://www.virginia.edu/generalfacultycouncil/bylaws.html; the
newly amended Bylaws may be found at http://www.virginia.edu/generalfacultycouncil/documents/amended_bylaws2009.pdf.
The Bylaws were amended in several places to bring them into alignment
with current practices of the University and the Council. Two changes of
note are designed to:
- Bring the Bylaws into agreement with the current descriptions of
members as used by the Provost's Office and University Human Relations;
- Add the official post of Treasurer (appointed by the Chair), who will
monitor and report on Council financial transactions.
Please vote to either approve or deny these changes between Wednesday, June 3 and Tuesday, June 9, 2009.
