At-Large:

This individual will represent the interests of the Non-Tenure Track Faculty and Senior Professional Research Staff across the University of Virginia.

The councilor elected will serve from June 2013 - June 2016.

Please vote for ONE of the candidates listed below between Monday, March 18, 2013 and Friday, March 22, 2013.

Antonio Rice, Director, Training & Student Engagement, ITS

"It would be an honor to represent the general faculty at large. I believe I have much to offer and will stand with my fellow council members to work toward positively impacting the greater University community. My role as the director of Training and Student Engagement, has allowed me to gain a good understanding of the issues facing the general faculty. This opportunity offers me the chance to go beyond my own department and serve the University in a larger context. I believe our institution is only as strong as the faculty that serves it. My goal is to use my 13 years of non-tenured faculty experience and my leadership ability to create and foster an environment where general faculty has a voice that is heard and recognized."

Ed Murphy, Associate Professor, Department of Astronomy

"Since the fall of 2000, I have been a member of the General Faculty in the Department of Astronomy. In addition to teaching, I manage the education and outreach program in my department. In this role, I have gained broad experience working with the community and the University administration. I have worked closely with faculty in the Curry School of Education, the School of Continuing and Professional Studies and the School of Engineering and Applied Science to develop and implement outreach programs and professional development courses for teachers. These experiences have given me insight into the challenges, and rewards, of being non-tenure-track faculty. I believe that I can use these experiences to be an advocate for the General Faculty."

Jennifer Stertzer, Lecturer and Associate Editor, Papers of George Washington

"As an editor of the Papers of George Washington, I have been a member of the General Faculty at the University of Virginia for over 12 years. During that period I have participated in, or been informed by, various aspects of UVA ranging from the Department of History, to the Office of the Dean, to the Office of Sponsored Programs. My desire to represent the General Faculty of the College of Arts and Sciences is motivated by several things, among them issues of rank and promotion, the future of ECE, and finding ways to preserve a culture of learning, development, and growth here at the University. Thank you for your consideration and support."

Steven Lewis Warner , Lecturer, Department of Drama

"As a member of the General Faculty, past representative of the GFC 2008-2011, and the Technical Director / Lecturer in the Drama Department since 2006, I am honored to run as a returning representative from the College of Arts and Sciences. On the council, my hope would be to: 1.) represent your interests, the interests of the General Faculty of the College, including the large number of arts faculty and senior professional research staff; 2.) represent and advocate for the interests of the General Faculty at large to the University administrators and community; 3.) further expand the visibility and efficacy of the GFC, and better understand its functioning; 4.) serve in other capacities, including advocating for the UVa experience - and our students, faculty, and staff - as a whole. As a Technical Director, one works to connect with diverse groups of people in the inspired pursuit of common goals - I would hope to do the same on the GFC. "

Health Professionals:

These individuals will represent the interests of the Non-Tenure Track Faculty and Senior Professional Research Staff employed in School of Medicine, School of Nursing and the University Hospital.

The councilors elected will serve from June 2013 - June 2016.

Please vote for TWO of the candidates listed below between Monday, March 18, 2013 and Friday, March 22, 2013.

Dan Gioeli, Associate Professor, Department of Microbiology, Immunology, and Cancer Biology; School of Medicine

"I have been a General Faculty member since 2002 in the School of Medicine. During that time, I have directed extramurally funded research and am currently the PI of an NCI R01 funded research program and a co-director of a core of a P01 grant. My primary research interest has focused on the mechanistic underpinnings of how signal transduction pathways contribute to cancer progression. As a member of the General Faculty Council, I will represent the interests of the SOM General Faculty, including the interests of independent research faculty. I will respectfully advocate for addressing the concerns of the SOM General Faculty to our colleagues across grounds and the University community at large. As we go into the future, it is vital that we, as faculty, work together to ensure that we have the most fertile ground possible for education and research here at The University so that we all feel that the work we do here supports the needs of our community and makes a difference. Thank you for your support. "

Kathryn B. Reid, RN, PhD, Assistant Professor, School of Nursing

"I've been a member of the general faculty for almost 20 years, and a member of the General Faculty Council for one term. My experiences as a teacher, researcher, and administrator equip me with a strong understanding of faculty roles and faculty governance processes. I've devoted the past 8 years of my career to developing and leading the new master's-entry Clinical Nurse Leader program. This program is specifically designed to improve safe and quality care health care delivery environments, and I also help lead these educational efforts at a national level. As a leader in the School of Nursing and with the professional nursing workforce, I sincerely hope to have a continued opportunity to contribute more widely to the University community in the coming years."

Cornelius Thomas, Assistant Professor, Department of Psychiatry and Neurobehavioral Sciences, School of Medicine

"As a clinical faculty member in the Department of Psychiatry since 2009, I would be honored to service on the General Faculty Council representing Health Professionals. UVA Health System provides exceptional health care to patients and quality training experiences for health professionals due to the hard-work and dedication of our Non-Tenure Track Faculty. Even as the Medical Center faces ongoing financial stresses, we need to continue to pursue strategies that encourage teamwork, faculty retention and improved work satisfaction. Having served in various leadership positions during my career in US Navy, I understand the many challenges that impact large organizations. I believe that the GFC will continue to play an important role in UVA’s success, and would welcome the opportunity to represent Health Professionals on this committee."

Dorothy Tullmann, Assistant Professor, School of Nursing

"As a member of the general faculty since 2007, I would be honored to serve as one of the Health Professionals Representatives on the General Faculty Council. A native of California, my clinical background includes many years as an adult critical care nurse and Critical Care Clinical Nurse Specialist. I am currently practicing as a Forensic Nurse Examiner in the Emergency Department of the UVA Health System. In the School of Nursing I serve as the Program Director for MSN and DNP Programs. I also serve as Co-Chair of the Interprofessional Education Initiative with the Schools of Medicine and Nursing. The university is changing rapidly and those of us who are not on the tenure track must be vigilant to ensure that our interests are not overlooked. The GFC has provided wonderful advocacy for the general faculty in the past and I would be honored to participate in its ongoing efforts."

Bethany Nowviskie, Director, Digital Research & Scholarship, University Library

"As chair-elect of the General Faculty Council and current chair of its Policy Committee, I am honored to be nominated to represent UVa’s librarians for a second term. In my role as Director of Digital Research & Scholarship for the Library, I foster collaborative teams of faculty, students, and staff members dedicated to scholarly projects. As president of the Association for Computers and the Humanities, I guide an international society that (like the GFC) represents a diversity of professions and perspectives. The seventeen years I have spent at UVa—as graduate student and instructor, member of the professional research staff of the University, and Associate Librarian on its administrative and professional faculty—have equipped me to appreciate and represent the important contributions of non-tenure-track faculty and researchers to the University."

Denise Karaoli, Associate Director of Career Development, Darden Graduate School of Business

"I would like to be considered for being re-nominated for the GFC for the Professional Schools. I have served on the GFC for the past 3 years and have been a member of the General Policy Committee. I have seen the Council become focused on important strategic initiatives and would be honored to continue with our work in these areas. After working three years in the President's Office, four years in the Vice-President and Provost Office, and now 7 years at Darden, I believe that I would be able to bring multiple perspectives to the GFC. I am passionate about UVA and bringing all schools together for dialogue, transparency, and decision making. I also can bring my special interest and expertise regarding international and diversity initiatives at the University. I have worked with all of the UVA schools as the Project Manager of Virginia 2020 (previous UVA strategic planning initiative) so I understand the nuances and familiar with faculty at each school. Finally, I believe that I can be especially effective representing the GFC for the Professional schools due to my appreciative understanding of the unique, fast paced, and multifaceted mechanisms of a UVA professional school."
