Review of Committee Business

Town Meetings, organized as venues for General Faculty members to interact directly with their representatives to the General Faculty Council, were held in various schools of the University in the fall of 2000. Suggestions, questions and ideas from attendees were summarized in a report by Patricia Foley.

Council members participated in two New Faculty /Staff Welcome Fairs held during the year, providing information to interested new faculty members about the Council. A 2-page sheet of GFC’s mission, schedule, officers, members, and ways to communicate with Council was prepared for distribution at the Welcome Fairs.

Building on the foundation of extensive past efforts, additional progress was made on the General Faculty Policy document. Frank Butros, Patricia Foley, William Keene, and Jane Penner worked with Alex Johnson (Provost’s Office) and, at the end of the term year, a January 2001 and a May 2001 draft of the policy had been distributed. Minor revisions were underway at the end of the term year, with the expectation of a final Provost’s Office-approved version of the policy in June/July 2001.

Informational presentations were made to the Council during the year. Terry Lockard reported on UVA’s Information Technology and Communication (ITC) organization. Tara Talfair outlined for Council the development opportunities available to faculty through the Department of Organizational Development and Training.

Bob Sweeney, Vice-President for Development, addressed the Council on the topic of the search process to fill the position of Provost of the University (soon to be vacated by Peter Lowe). In his comments Mr. Sweeney listed four defining qualities the committee will evaluate in the search: leadership, scholarship, balance, and aspiration. Following the recommendation of the search committee, President Casteen will ultimately make the final choice for Provost. The committee expects to have the new Provost in place by Fall 2001.

A reception to welcome new council members and thank outgoing council members was held in the garden of Pavilion VIII on June 22, 2000.

Respectfully submitted,

Jan Redick
