The Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) is pleased to announce that Jann Balmer, RN, PhD has been selected to receive the 2003 Willard M. Duff, PhD Award. Dr. Balmer will be presented with the award during the November 2003 ACCME Meeting.
The Willard M. Duff, PhD Award recognizes volunteers who have provided exemplary and long-term service to the ACCME and/or its committees. The award is named for the late Willard M. Duff, PhD, a long-time ACCME volunteer whose vision, wisdom and dedication helped bring the ACCME through its early, formative years.
Dr. Balmer was chosen as the 2003 award recipient because of her long-term service and commitment to the ACCME. She began her affiliation with the ACCME in 1990 when she became an accreditation surveyor. Since that time, Dr. Balmer has completed over 35 surveys on behalf of the ACCME. From 1995-2000, Dr. Balmer served on the Accreditation Review Committee (ARC). Dr. Balmer served as Vice Chair of the ARC in 1998. In 1999 and 2000, Dr. Balmer served as Chair of the ARC. It was in her final year of service, 2000, that the ACCME made its first accreditation decisions using the Elements and Decision-Making Criteria of the New System. As her letter of nomination states:
"...Jann's long lasting contribution to the ACCME was putting the new accreditation system into action as she served as the Chair of the ARC... Her service to the ACCME at a time of change was invaluable..."
Dr. Balmer joined the ACCME's Monitoring Committee in 2001 and has served as ACCME workshop faculty since 1998. In addition, Dr. Balmer agreed to assist the ACCME staff in a collaborative project between the ACCME, the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), and the American Council on Pharmaceutical Education (ACPE), as a unified self-study report was being crafted. Dr. Balmer's experience on the ARC and as a surveyor, as well as her background as a nurse and educator, were invaluable to the project.
Dr. Balmer's career reflects her commitment to continuing medical education. Dr. Balmer currently serves as the Director of Continuing Medical Education at the University of Virginia School of Medicine. Her commitment to excellence within continuing medical education exemplifies the spirit of the Will Duff Award. The ACCME congratulates Dr. Balmer on this award and extends its sincere appreciation to her for her service.
