Day 1                         Saturday, 12-29-07   

Arrival in Berlin  

Check in at Hotel Sylter Hof 

1400    Initial meeting 2:00 pm. Room 3

1445    Walking tour of the neighborhood to Wittenberg Platz,                          Kaufhof des Westens (KaDeWe), the Kaiser Wilhelm                          Memorial Church, Berlin Infostore in the Europa center,                        Kurfürstendamm, and Bahnhof Zoo. Purchase of weekly                      transportation passes, city maps, visit to local bank for                      purchase of Euros.       
          

1800    Dinner together in Savigny Platz at San Remo (included in                  program fee) then free time and  walk/bus back to Hotel                                 Sylter Hof

Day 2                         Sunday, 12-30-07

900    Meeting in lobby, Hotel    
915    Departure “Big Berlin Tour” by bus (Severin & Kuehn)                         Highlights of the capital with the Government                                          area, with a stop at the Brandenburger Gate. This tour will                 show you the Kaiser-Wilhelm-Memorial Church,                                 Europe-Centre, Bauhaus Museum, New National Gallery,                 Philharmonic Hall, Potsdam Square/Sony-Center, Jewish                 Museum, Gendarmenmarkt, Alexander Square,                                 St.-Nicolai-Quarter, City Hall of Berlin, TV-Tower, the Berlin                 Cathedral, Zeughaus, State Opera, Boulevard ”Unter den                 Linden”, Brandenburg Gate, Reichstag, Goverment Area                     Chancellery, Tiergarten, Bellevue Palace, Siegessäule,                     Charlottenburg Palace, Olympic Stadium, Grunewald Forest,            Radio Tower, ICC, Kurfürstendamm

1300 Lunch following city tour in Kurfürstendamm area (on your own)  
1500 Departure from Hotel for concert 

1600 Johann Strauss New Year’s Concert at the Konzerthaus on the Gendarmenmarkt

1830 Dinner (on your own) after the concert in the area of the theater, then free time. 

Day 3                         Monday, 12-31-07 New Year’s Eve

900-1000 Class, Room 3, Sylter Hof   Language instruction  

1000 -1100 Discussion of initial impressions of Berlin and projects  

1300-1800   Walk to the Zeughaus, Schloßplatz, Museum Island,         Weihnachtsmarkt  (coffee and Glühwein) and then free time. 

2030  Departure from Hotel for New Year´s Eve Celebration,     Brandenburger Tor-  Siegessäule area

1300 Assignment: Ladd, “Brandenburg Gate,” pp. 70-81; “The             Reichstag,” pp. 84-96.  

1400 Departure for German Historical Museum and then either to         the Alte  Nationalgalerie or to the Altes Museum (both on Museum     Island)  

1800 Meet at the Hackesche Höfe for dinner choices; evening free.

                     Introduction to Verdi, “Rigoletto” (gms)

1200-1330     Guided tour of the Reichstag and Brandenburg Gate

1330     Walk to Pariser Platz, “Berlin Story” book store, Berlin memorabilia

1800             Departure from hotel for opera.

10:00 Peter Monnerjahn on German youth, current attitudes

1030  Departure from Hotel for the Jewish Museum (Daniel Libeskind)

1100 Guided Tour, Jewish Museum then choice of

      a. stay on at the Museum

      b. accompany Anna Baker to the Neue Synagoge and Scheunenviertel

      c. accompany gms to the Turkish quarter along Oranientstr.   Or

      d. visit the Museum at Checkpoint Charlie

700 depart hotel for Berliner Ensemble (Brecht’s theater)

1130-1300 Discussion of Brecht’s Threepenny Opera at nearby         restaurant.
