Major/Minor

What are the German Programs?  How can I major or minor in German?  To major or minor in German, a student must first complete courses through the intermediate level (German 202).  Students who have a score of 620 on the CEEB German Achievement Test or the University’s German Placement Test or a 5 on the College Board German Advanced Placement exam may also commence work toward the major.

 
The German Studies Major. 
German Studies:  GETR 233.  Introduction to German studies (pre-req.) five GERM courses at the 300 level or above, including GERM 300, 301, 311, or 312 (or an approved substitution); German Studies majors take an additional five German Studies related courses from within or outside the German Department; two of those courses are in specific areas of concentrations (e.g., History, Art History, Architecture, Music, Philosophy, Politics, Sociology, etc.).  Recommended: one course in modern German History.

The German Literature Major

Ten courses or thirty semester hours in German at the 300-level or above, including:

1.            GERM 300 (Intensive Grammar)                

2.            GERM 301 (Introduction to Literature)     

3.            GERM 311 or 312 (Survey of German Literature)

4.         GERM 460 (Senior Seminar)

5.         At least one further GERM literature course

Two of the ten courses may be GETR courses.  Up to 12 credits may be transferred from other institutions (in the USA or abroad) to fulfill the major requirements.  Prior approval required.
