WLP Focus Groups and Events

From 2001–2005, WLP conducted twelve regional focus groups to solicit input from University alumnae on ways to best engage women with UVa. Through these meetings, WLP sought to refine its mission and goals and establish a strong network of alumnae nationwide. Incorporating these suggestions, WLP is actively engaging the intellectual and creative efforts of the prestigious network of UVa alumnae. Major themes emerging from the focus groups included:

  • Promote the achievements of university women, both on Grounds and in their communities.
  • Promote women as candidates for leadership positions on various bodies throughout the university.
  • Host events that prominently feature university women and celebrate the achievements of women.
  • Provide opportunities for women to give to specific causes and individuals around Grounds that will promote a strong connection after giving.

In all, 319 stakeholders participated. Since these focus groups, we have used these themes to guide our workplans. Here are some of the ways we have responded:

  • We are issuing a quarterly WLP eNewsletter that highlights the achievements of university women on Grounds and in their communities.
  • We continue to recommend annually new women candidates for University advisory boards.
  • On September 26 & 27, 2008 we hosted the inaugural Women in Leadership Conference on Grounds. The conference attracted over 160 women who attended panel discussions and group session events focused on celebrating the achievements of university women, and highlighting how they are making a difference as leaders in their communities.
  • We have created a gift catalog that comprises specific items, with names of recipients and full descriptions of the purpose of the gift, to which alumnae can give.

We continue to welcome suggestions from our alumnae and women friends, parents, faculty and students, and look forward to implementing your recommendations for building greater engagement, leadership and giving between the University and its women.
