William Scanlan, Jr.

William Scanlan, Jr., is a Brownsville native, attorney and Shareholder of Schoenbaum, Curphy & Scanlan, P.C. Bill is a graduate of the College of Arts and Sciences and majored in History. While at the University, he was a member of Eli Banana, Raven Society and Kappa Alpha Order. After graduation in 1963, Bill attended the University of Texas and received his law degree in 1966.

Mr. Scanlan served as a Captain in the U.S. Army from 1966 to 1970 with one year of service in Vietnam. His decorations include: National Defense Service Medal; Vietnam Service Medal;Vietnam Campaign Medal; Army Commendation Medal with First Oakleaf Cluster and Bronze Star. After his military service he attended George Washington University where he specialized in Taxation Law. Bill was an adjunct professor of estate and gift taxation at St. Mary's University School of Law for over twenty years, and is the author of numerous articles and a frequent lecturer. He served for five years as the Taxation Editor and for three years as the General Editor of the Real Estate, Trust and Probate Newsletter published by the State Bar of Texas. He is also a Fellow and Former Regent of the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel and Editor of ACTEC Notes.

Mr. Scanlan.'s civic activities included service as Trustee, College of Arts and Sciences of the University of Virginia and member of the University of Virginia's Planned Giving Council. His current civic activities include: San Antonio Botanical Society, San Antonio, Texas, Treasurer and Member of Board of Trustees; San Antonio Children's Hospital Endowment Fund, San Antonio, Texas, Board of Trustees; San Antonio Museum of Art – Trustee; Mayor's Policy Group; Main Plaza Conservancy - Chairman of the Board; St. Andrew's-Sewanee - Board of Trustees; Las Misiones Campaign – Member; Ewing Halsell Foundation – Director.

Bill and his wife, the former Cecil Collins reside in San Antonio, TX and have two children. Bill is fluent in Spanish and in his spare time enjoys fly fishing, mountaineering Mexican literature.
