In 1975 President Frank L. Hereford, Jr. (College ’43, Graduate Arts & Sciences ’47), established the Lawn Society to recognize the University’s leading benefactors and to encourage other alumni and friends to follow their example.

Over the past three and one-half decades, Lawn Society members have helped shape nearly every aspect of life at U.Va. From sustaining its reputation as one of the nation’s most academically rigorous universities to launching pioneering programs in research and service, from funding the construction of buildings that advance the pursuit of knowledge and all forms of artistic expression to supporting men’s and women’s Division I athletic competition, society members’ generosity has truly transformed the University.

Gifts qualifying donors for membership may be made in the following ways:

  • Cash, including matching gifts from the donor’s employer
  • Securities or other appreciated assets
  • Qualifying gifts in kind
  • Irrevocable gifts, including funded charitable remainder trusts and charitable gift annuities
  • Paid-up life insurance policies with the University as beneficiary (based on cash surrender value)
  • Gifts made from family foundations, closely held corporations, community foundations, or donor-advised funds.
