Art Classes

If you want to take art classes, try the McGuffey Art Center , Piedmont Virginia Community College , or the Albemarle County School's Community Education .

Albemarle County Adult Education ESOL - English for Speakers of Other Languages Program

The Albemarle County Adult Education ESOL Program offers general English classes with year-round registration for beginner- to advanced-level students.  Classes are held every Monday and Wednesday evening at Albemarle High School from 6:30 - 8:30 pm. The program also offers beginner-, intermediate- and advanced-level communication skills daytime classes and T.O.E.F.L. preparation classes. The ESOL Program has also received recognition for "The Web Project." This is an ongoing student project that accepts applicants from advanced-level ESOL students to work on an interactive course developing web-page content and DVD resources for the ESOL community in the Charlottesville area.

Albemarle County Parks & Recreation

Albemarle County Schools

The county's community education program, Open Doors, offers a variety of classes, including art (painting, stained class, woodworking, photography, etc.), music, cooking, computers, yoga, belly dancing, golf, gardening, sign language, and finance. Schedule distributed countywide.

Blue Ridge English as a Second Language Council (BRESL)

BRESL is a volunteer-based, non-profit organization serving the ESL community in Greater Charlottesville. Trained tutors provide free English tutoring services and teach cultural adaptation skills to ESL adults.

Charlottesville Department of Parks & Recreation

A broad range of classes and competitive sports are available for children and adults. Activities vary by age and include art, dance, music, basketball, tennis, swimming, gymnastics, and much more. Call for a brochure or check the Daily Progress for information.

GOvisual Photo Arts Center

Monthly photo exhibits, darkroom space and shooting studio rental, used photography equipment, photo classes, and do-it-yourself framing.

McGuffey Arts Center

Classes are offered in creative bookmaking, calligraphy, fiber arts, Chinese brush painting, African dancing, glass blowing, stained glass, painting, and printmaking. Children and adults. Call for further information.

Offers a wide variety of programs for men, women, and children. Programs include swim team, martial arts, basketball, summer day camp, karate, and weight control. Also offers child care. Fees vary by class.

Piedmont Virginia Community College

Offers variety of courses in both academic and nonacademic fields. Well-regarded arts classes. Registration takes place in January, May, and August. Charlottesville Transit bus available to campus.

U.Va. School of Continuing and Professional Studies

Offers a large number of credit and noncredit courses starting in September and January. The spring catalog is available in January, and the brochure for the fall session is available in late August and may be picked up at the School of Continuing Ed. Cost varies for noncredit classes.
