Charlottesville is a very pet-friendly community. Many law students have found apartment complexes very close to the school that allow pets. Check the yellow pages for dozens of local kennels and veterinarians that can keep tabs on your dog while you travel or are otherwise outside of Charlottesville.
Dogs four months or older must be registered with the City of Charlottesville or Albemarle County, depending upon your place of residence. Once your dog is registered, it will receive a tag to wear on its collar.
Albemarle County Finance Department
You may purchase your dog license here, from the Scottsville Town Administrator, or at the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA). Cost is $3 for unsexed animals and $5 for a female or male. Tags go on sale yearly beginning November 1 and must be purchased and on your dog by January 31. You must present a certificate of current rabies vaccination to get a tag.

City of Charlottesville Treasurer's Office
Cost is $10 for male or female, and $4 for spayed or neutered animals. Replacement tags can be obtained for 50 cents. You must have a street address (no P.O. Box) and a rabies certificate from your vet to register your dog. Tags may be purchased through City Hall, the Charlottesville-Albemarle SPCA, or through the mail, as long as the rabies certificate accompanies the registration form.
