Introductory Seminar – “The World of Jane Austen: Examining the Novels in a Historical Context”

Richard Floyd

In this seminar students will read the major works of Jane Austen.  Through a combination of class discussion, written assignments, and other projects, students will explore the social, cultural, economic, and even political themes of the novels in their original contexts.  The course will also consider the resurgence in popularity of Austen’s works in recent years, especially film and television portrayals of her novels.
