This course explores the social, political, and cultural transformations that produced the West as we know it today. Among the themes we will discuss are the rise of the modern nation-state; revolutions in science, technology, and the arts; the emergence of key modern ideologies (including liberalism, fascism and communism), as well as the changing nature of work and everyday life in the modern era.  Reading assignments will average between 100 and 150 pages a week. Requirements include regular attendance, two exams and two short essays (4-5 pages each).
