Emergence of Modern Britain

Richard Floyd

This course surveys the major institutions that have shaped the history of modern Britain over the past 300 years.  Topics include the pressures of agricultural and industrial revolution, parliamentary government and the role of a monarchy in an increasingly democratic society, the acquisition and dismantling of empire in Asia and Africa, and the relation of church and state.  In the process, students shall acquire familiarity with the examination of a wide range of primary sources, and learn to analyze and contextualize them in a historically sensitive fashion.
