History Seminar – “The British Empire in Cross-Cultural Perspective”

Staff

This seminar examines various aspects of the British Empire.  Topics include formal manifestations of empire in Africa, Asia, and the Caribbean; the informal empire in Latin America, the Middle East and elsewhere; imperial relations with Ireland; and questions of “internal” empire within Britain itself.  Throughout the semester, students will develop provisional answers to two broad questions: What is the definition of “empire”? and Was the British Empire a “good thing”?
