Graduate Survey of Early Modern Europe
Spring 2010
This course is intended as an introduction to the study of early modern European history, 1400-1650. Each week we will read and discuss a monograph or collection of articles. The course is structured thematically (rather than regionally), and will cover topics such as the Renaissance, Reformations, gender, consumption, and east and west. It is designed to introduce students to key conceptual issues of this period, as well as recent historiographic trends. The works assigned are also designed to cover a range of methodological approaches. Students will be expected to discuss not only the books, but also critical responses to them. Each week different students will take turn leading discussion, which also might include an additional reading. Each student will write two reviews (1,000 words) of a book on the syllabus, and two historiographic essays (10-15 pp in length) on the topic of the student's choice.
