Transfer Credit Approval Procedure
Below are instructions for obtaining transfer credit for history courses that you have (A) already taken or (B) plan to take at other universities, colleges, and community colleges in the United States or abroad. These instructions apply to summer school courses, semester or year long courses, and courses taken during a leave of absence from the university.
For more information, contact Tico Braun.
A.) To obtain major or elective History Department credit for a course or courses that you have already taken in the United States or abroad, you must do the following:
1. If you seek credit for a course or courses taken at another university, college or community college in the United States, fill out the "University of Virginia Undergraduate College of Arts and Sciences Request for Transfer of Credit" form which is available in Garrett Hall. Make sure you provide a correct and easily legible email address on it. Use separate forms for each academic department. Do not put courses from different departments on a single form.
2. If you seek credit for a course or courses taken abroad, fill out the "Study Abroad Transfer of Credit Equivalency Form," which is available in the Study Abroad Office in Minor Hall. Make sure you provide a correct and easily legible email address on the form. Use separate forms for each academic department. Do not put courses from different departments on a single form.
3. Do not fill out the line for UVA equivalence. State only the number and name of the course at the host institution.
4. Provide as much information about the course(s) as you can. You must supply a syllabus or course description for each course. We also need to know how many credits each course was awarded at the host institution and how many hours you were in class.
5. Try to provide at least one sample of your work from the course(s). These will typically be essays or exams.
6. Provide a VISTAA form of your academic record.
7. State whether you are requesting Major credit or Elective credit. If you are or will be a History major, you want the course for Major credit. If not, you want Elective credit.
8. Bring all this material to Randall Hall 102, and place it in the box labeled TRANSFER CREDITS.
9. After our review and determination of UVA equivalence, we will forward the form to Garrett Hall for Dean's approval.
If there is a problem, either at the departmental or Dean's level, you will be notified.
