Current Research

I am currently working on a social history of the city of Chongqing, Sichuan Province. The study is based on local archival materials and draws heavily from legal case records. My work thus far has focused on the formal administrative structure of city government as well as the role of merchant guilds, native place associations, and secret societies as alternative centers of authority and power.
