Community Relations Committee
The Community Relations Committee helps facilitate dialog between the full Honor Committee and the community and ensures that students have unique privileges that promote a community of trust between students and merchants in the Charlottesville community. One of these privileges is the ability to write checks to local merchants by simply showing your University of Virginia ID. The Community Relations Committee maintains this privilege by providing a means for merchants to contact it when a student bounces a check, rather than the police. In this way, the Community Relations Committee acts as an intermediary between the student and the merchant, ensuring continued check-writing privileges for students in the community.
Students, however, should be aware that bouncing checks can be costly. Most result in a large service charge from banks, plus an additional charge from the merchant. The Committee has the power to suspend repeat offenders so as no to jeopardize the trust between merchants and students. Cases where a student has willfully written bad checks are considered a breach of the trust established by the Honor System, and will be referred to the Honor Committee for investigation.
The Community Relations Committee also works with the Dean of Students office on the Honor Loan program. As a UVA student, you are eligible for an Honor Loan. How does it work?
Students can borrow up to $600 interest free for 30 days under the program. The Honor Loan Officer, a fellow student, will speak with you about the program and help you determine if your circumstances match the goals of the Honor Loan program. The loan is issued to cover temporary, emergency financial needs. You can make an appointment to see the Honor Loan Officer by calling 434-924-7133, or by stopping by the Dean of Students Office in Peabody Hall.
The Vice Chair for Community Relations leads this committee. This year, the Vice Chair for Community Relations is Josh Hess . From among its members, the Community Relations Committee selects three Coordinators. The Coordinators have not yet been chosen this year. The Committee can be contacted at 924-7602.
