The Honor System's Survey of all UVa. Faculty

April, 1999

Thank you to those of you who filled out the Faculty Survey on the Honor System sent by the Honor Faculty Advisory Committee (FAC) earlier this year. We received a total response rate of 36% of faculty members, which we were pleased with.

Here's a quick summary of the results. Complete results follow:

About 60% of respondents said overall opinion of the Honor System was somewhat/very positive

About 65% of respondents are in favor of a student run Honor System (or one with a legal advisor)

  • The Honor Committee has appointed Earl Dudley, from  the Law School and UVA's General Counsel, as our current legal advisor.

63% of respondents favored a multiple sanction system over the current single sanction system

  • The Honor Committee is revising the Constitution, specifically addressing concerns highlighted by the Board of Visitors and this faculty survey, including the issue of single sanction.

When aware of clear academic dishonesty, 60% of respondents are likely to initiate an honor case and 12% unlikely to initiate an honor case. 30% of respondents noted that they wouldn't initiate an Honor case because they think "the process is too time-consuming"

  • In the past two years, the process has been streamlined. Cases are now normally completed within three months.  The current time limit for investigating a case is 14 days.

34% of respondents discuss the honor system with students at the beginning of the class term, 24% discuss it on their syllabus, 24% mention it throughout the year, 27% mention it on individual assignments, and 36% never discuss it.

The Honor Committee is aware that many community members are dissatisfied; therefore we are continually evolving to work toward the ideal of a Community of Trust. This survey is one important tool in that process.

Thank you again for participating.

If you have any questions, comments, or suggestions, please contact Rachel Yoo, Chair of Honor's Faculty Advisory Committee, at rsy8y@virginia.edu or Suzanne Farnsworth, Head of FAC Honor System Survey, at farnsworth@virginia.edu.
