Frequently Asked Questions

Q. Am I guaranteed my first choice for department or professor?
A. Although we take preferences into account and try to accommodate everyone’s requests, we do not guarantee that everyone will get their first preference.

Q. I am not a rising Senior, can I still apply?
A. Currently, the program is only accepting applications from rising seniors.

Q. Do I need to provide my own transportation?
A. Yes, transportation to and from the research facility will be required. Students will have free access to U.Va. University Transit Service (UTS) bus system and the Charlottesville Area Transit (CAT) Bus System.

Q. I have a camp or family vacation overlapping with one week of the program, can I still attend?
A. Due to the intensity and short duration of the program, any time spent away from the program will not be beneficial to the student and the lab. Missing time from the program may result in inadequate time to finish the project and prepare the final presentation. Therefore, we ask that family vacations and camps be avoided as attendance is required for the entire duration of the program.

Q. Do I have to live in Charlottesville or Albemarle county area to participate in the program?
A.
Students must live in the local area for ease of transport. Students will need to provide their own daily transportation and housing will not be provided.

Q. Is there a minimum age requirement?
A. There is no minimum age requirement but students must be a rising Senior in order to apply.

Q. Is this a paid internship?
A. No, we are unable to pay our interns at this point.

Q. What if I cannot afford the costs of the program?
A.Thanks to funding from the College and Graduate School of Arts and Sciences and the School of Engineering and Applied Science, the HooS-STER program is able to cover the costs of the program for students who demonstrate a financial need through qualification for and enrollment in free or reduced lunch at their schools. Applicants seeking this financial aid should indicate so on the application and include the signature of a parent or guardian granting permission for the HooS-STER program to contact the student’s school to verify eligibility.

Q. What does the program package include?
A. Students will have full access to U.Va. libraries, gyms, labs, and student health (if necessary). Students will receive an ID badge for access to the laboratory and a UVA email account for communication.

Q. When will I find out if I have been accepted?
A. The program will let students know the status of their applications by early April.
