Brown Residential College

[Area Photo]

Established in 1986, Brown College was the first residential college at the University of Virginia. Here, students and faculty live and work in close proximity to one another, fostering an atmosphere of community. The College is led by a Principal of the College and a Director of Studies. About forty faculty fellows from many departments and schools of the University maintain close ties to the College.

Brown College is an arrangement of interconnected, air conditioned buildings called "portals". The 12 portals are Davis, Gildersleeve, Harrison, Holmes, Long, Mallet, McGuffey, Peters, Rogers, Smith, Tucker and Venable.

Each living unit within a portal contains two single-occupancy bedrooms, and a shared bathroom. The College complex provides a wide array of special facilities, including a kitchen, computer lab, laundry room, library, and a variety of lounges.

Brown College requires a separate application in addition to the Incoming or Returning Student Housing Application. You can obtain more information from Brown College's website. Note: Upperclass students living in Brown College are required to participate in a meal plan. Please contact Dining Services for more information.
