University Gardens

[Area Photo] University Gardens is located approximately six-tenths of a mile from the University's Central Grounds and the Law and Darden Schools on North Grounds. This community is surrounded on three sides by wooded areas and a private residential area.

There are eight buildings with a total of 69 apartments in University Gardens; 41 are one-bedroom and 28 are two-bedrooms. Most apartments are unfurnished, but do include a refrigerator/freezer and gas range. For more information, please see the Family Housing Handbook.

Description of Facilities
  • Each apartment front door has a door knob and dead bolt lock, a door chain, and peep hole. All apartment windows are equipped with locking devices that allow residents three options: the ability to lock a window when closed, to lock a window when opened several inches, and to open a window completely in the event of an emergency. All apartments have standard window locks. Instructions regarding the operation of the windows are available in the Family Housing Office. Residents are strongly encouraged to use all security devices provided and to report missing and non-functioning items immediately to Housing Facilities.
  • An air conditioner is provided in each apartment.
  • Most floors are wood. A few apartments have have linoleum floors or carpet. Bathroom floors are tile or linoleum.
  • Mini blinds are provided for all windows.
  • Apartments are heated by hot water convection radiators with thermostatic control valves.
  • A limited amount of storage space is provided for each apartment. Storage rooms are located in the 130, 86, and 85 buildings. Residents should keep the exterior door to the storage rooms locked at all times. A separate key that will open the exterior door to the storage room will be issued. The apartment door key opens the resident's individual storage bin. Storage bins are approximately 4 ft. x 4 ft. x 8 ft. tall. Since moisture can be a problem in underground facilities, wooden pallets may be obtained for your storage area by contacting Housing Facilities.
  • Kitchen sinks are single stainless steel or porcelain and do not have electric garbage disposals.
  • Microwave ovens are allowed in apartments. Waterbeds are not allowed.
  • Pictures may be hung on apartment walls by careful placement of nails and other hanging devices.
  • Installation of towel racks, cup hooks, etc. are permitted only INSIDE cabinets that have doors.
  • Residents must furnish their own pots, pans, dishes, utensils, linens, lamps, carpet, shower curtains, etc.
