Pollution Prevention

We strive to limit the use of toxic chemicals wherever possible in order to reduce atmospheric emissions and groundwater contamination. In addition, we seek to minimize air pollution by purchasing hybrid vehicles and gators, which produce significantly lower emissions than traditional vehicles.

Construction and Renovation

Construction and Renovation

Housing & Residence Life requires low-VOC paint and floor finishes in all new construction and renovation proects. Last year alone, this saved over 2.8 tons of atmospheric pollution from being released. Elimination of these harsh chemicals helps improve air quality and reduce emissions that contribute to climate change.

Nutrient Management Plan

All landscape services contracted to maintain residential lawn and landscaped areas must comply with University's nutrient management plan, to ensure that fertilizer is only applied when necessary and in appropriate amounts. Soil samples are regularly taken and analyzed to ensure compliance. In addition, all ice and snow removal products are complaint with the plan.

Green Cleaning Products

Green Cleaning Products

We are continually exploring new products that offer a reduced impact on the environment. In 2008 we transitioned to a green floor care system including stripper, wax and cleaner. We also use highly concentrated, pre-measured PortionPacs that reduce waste and energy spent in production, transportation and storage of cleaning products.

Vehicle Fleet

All new vehicles purchased for Housing & Residence Life use are electric or hybrid vehicles or gators, unless a specific justification exists for another type of vehicle. Currently, 40 percent of our vehicle fleet are hybrid vehicles.
