12. Who should I contact with questions related to my University ID card?
1. Why is the University issuing new ID cards to students?
As part of the University of Virginia’s social security number remediation initiative, the use of social security numbers will be systematically phased out, wherever possible, from the University’s central and departmental systems, starting with the ID card system and University ID cards.
2. What is the University ID card #?
The new University ID cards will contain a randomly assigned 9-digit number that will be called the “University ID #”.
The University ID number printed on the card cannot currently be used for academic transactions such as school forms, grades, course transactions, and major declarations. Everyone should follow current procedures until a transition can be effected.
3. Will I need to get my picture retaken for the new University ID card?
No. Existing photos will be used so students do not need to have their pictures retaken.
4. When will my current University ID card no longer work?
The old ID cards will continue to work until the first day of classes (August 28, 2007). On that date, you must begin using your new University ID card for access privileges, meal plans, Cavalier Advantage, etc. Your current card will no longer work.
The new University ID card will be required in order to access the football games.
5. Where do I go to pick up my new University ID card?
The new University ID cards can be obtained at the Observatory Hill.
6. Will I need to show any identification to pick up my new University ID card?
Yes. You will be required to show an unexpired U.S. drivers license, passport or U.S. military ID.
7. What is the purpose of the instructions given out with the new University ID cards?
When you pick up your new University ID card, you will also receive a card containing your personal pass-phrase and instructions for updating your central electronic identity information. This updated information will help to reduce the need to use social security numbers in online systems in the future.
8. When I get my University ID card, what should I do with my old card?
The current University ID cards must be returned when picking up the new University ID cards. The old cards will be destroyed in an appropriate manner as the social security number is encoded on the magnetic stripe.
9. Will my new University ID card include the same privileges that my old card did (meal plan, Plus$, Cavalier Advantage, Arts$, Film Festival, and access to residence halls, athletic events, intramural facilities)?
Yes. Your new University ID card will have the same privileges as the old card.
10. Will I be able to make deposits to my Cavalier Advantage account using my new University ID # or my SSN?
You will need to use the new University ID # and not the SSN.
11. Are the Health System ID cards/badges being reissued at this time?
No. This ID card reissuance does not include Health System ID cards/badges. The Health System will reissue ID cards/badges at a later date.
