Reissuance of University ID Cards
As part of the University of Virginia’s Social Security number remediation initiative, the use of Social Security numbers will be systematically phased out, wherever possible, from the University’s central and departmental systems, starting with the ID card system and University ID cards.
All students (excluding first years and transfers) will be issued a new University ID card.
All faculty, staff, foundation and contractor employees who currently have a University ID will be issued a new University ID card.
When you pick up your new University ID card, you will need to show an unexpired state or government issued picture identification card (U.S. driver’s license, passport or U.S. military ID). The current University ID cards must be returned when picking up the new University ID cards, but will not be considered a form of state or government issued identification card.
The University ID card and the number on it currently have uses such as building access, entrance to recreational facilities, and library transactions. (See the Overview page for a complete list.) This list will be expanding in the near future.
This ID card reissuance DOES NOT include Health System ID cards/badges. The Health System will reissue ID cards/badges at a later date.
