Franklin Dukes, Ph.D., Director

Author of Reaching for Higher Ground in Conflict Resolution and Resolving Public Conflict, Dr. Dukes is an experienced facilitator, trainer, and mediator. He brings a strong understanding of local government and community involvement, and has worked with numerous communities on a wide range of issues including water supply, school districting, facility siting, and management of park land. He has facilitated ground-breaking efforts in consensus building between the tobacco farmer and public health communities, and is now involved in facilitating community remediation and redevelopment of contaminated sites in different states. Tanya Denckla Cobb, Associate Director

Ms. Denckla Cobb is an experienced mediator, facilitator, and trainer and is certified by the Virginia Supreme Court to mediate at all levels of the court. As the former Executive Director of two nonprofit organizations, she brings strong experience in working with community issues at the grassroots level. She has facilitated a broad range of community and environmental issues such as community heritage, regional visioning, siting new courts facilities, biosolids, and septic system regulatory negotiation. She helped found, design, and now serves as faculty for the Natural Resources Leadership Institute. She also teaches courses in community food systems and other topics at UVA. Caroline Wilkinson, Program Manager

Ms. Wilkinson has experience in urban and environmental planning, group facilitation, and community decision-making processes. She currently manages the Virginia Natural Resources Leadership Institute. Her current projects include working with three Virginia Indian tribes and examining possibilities for regional green infrastructure planning. Her prior work in the environmental planning field includes site plan and environmental review, community involvement in transportation projects, and survey design and analysis. Richard C. Collins, Founder

Founder of the Institute for Environmental Negotiation in 1981, Dr. Collins has led successful projects on a wide range of controversial topics including waste management, natural resource issues, legislative proposals and historic preservation. His work has included planning studies, organizational development and environmental mediation. A. Bruce Dotson, Senior Associate

Dr. Dotson has been part of the Institute since 1981 and is now the Acting Dean of the School of Architecture. He was previously the Chair of the Department of Urban and Environmental Planning. His recent work addresses issues such as wetlands protection controversies, lead based paint, and ground water issues. He has also taught a variety of land use planning courses in the Department. Barbara Jones, Secretary

Tammy Switzer, Administrative Assistant

 

Mrs. Switzer has been working for the Institute for Environmental Negotiation since September 2008. Tammy worked for the University of Colorado Cancer Center before moving to Pittsburgh, PA where she was a stay-at-home mom. Tammy and her family have lived in Charlottesville for over 3 years.
