Petition To the Congress and the President

For the Preservation of Tobacco Communities And the Protection of Public Health

Be it Resolved that:

We the undersigned citizens, in the interests of reducing disease caused by the use of tobacco products and ensuring the long term economic viability of tobacco producing communities call upon Congress and the President to support legislative efforts to enact and implement the recommendations of the Presidential Commission Report, Tobacco At a Crossroads, including but not limited to:

The adoption of a tobacco equity reduction program to fairly compensate quota owners and growers for the loss in value of their quota assets;

A major restructuring of the federal tobacco control program to address changing economic and public health realities;

The establishment of a Center for Tobacco -Dependent Communities to address the economic development challenges and opportunities that tobacco producing communities face;

Providing fair and effective regulatory authority over the manufacture, sale, distribution, labeling and marketing of tobacco products by the FDA;

Ensuring adequate funding for tobacco prevention and control programs by the states as suggested by the Surgeon General of the United States in the August 2000 report, including coverage under Medicare and Medicaid programs for smoking cessation.

PRESIDENT'S COMMISSION FINAL REPORT ENDORSEMENT

I/we ___________________________________ endorse the Final Report of the President's Commission on Improving Economic Opportunity in Communities Dependent on Tobacco Production While Protecting Public Health and call upon Congress and the President to support legislative efforts to enact and implement the recommendations of the commission report, Tobacco At a Crossroads.
