    Institute for Environmental Negotiation (IEN)
    An affiliate of the University of Virginia that will serve as facilitator for the Southern Tobacco Communities Project.

    Rural Economic Research Analysis Program (REAP)
    An affiliate of Virginia Tech that will provide the Southern Tobacco Communities Project with research information.

    University of Virginia Health Sciences Center
    IQ Health, one of the Roundtable Project coordinators, is part of the UVA Health Sciences Center. They also have an excellent section dedicated to the Southern Tobacco Communities Project.

    Weldon Cooper Center for Public Service
    The Weldon Cooper Center is affiliated with the University of Virginia and provides research, information, data, technical assistance, and training in Virginia to state and local officials, community leaders and the public.

    President's Commission
    This Commission, established by Executive Order on September 27, 2000, will advise the President on changes within the tobacco farming economy and make recommendations that target public health and the sustainability of tobacco farming communities. The Commission's final Report and its recommendations are now available for review.

    Robert Wood Johnson Smokeless States Program
    Program launched by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation in 1993 to work towards the goal of reducing tobacco use, particularly among children.  The program funds tobacco control initiatives in 30 states and two cities.

    Smoking Control Resource Center: SCARCNet
    Network developed by the Advocacy Institute for public health, policy and communications specialists engaged in tobacco control advocacy.  Resources include facilitated discussions and news summaries, research publications and media advocacy tools.

    Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration
    Organization targets improvements in the quality and availability of prevention, treatment and rehabilitation services in order to reduce the illness, death, disabilities and societal costs resulting from substance abuse and mental illnesses.  Operates the National Clearinghouse for Alcohol and Drug Information.

    Tobacco BBS
    Extensive information about tobacco issues in the news, the latest research, books about tobacco, and more links to tobacco-related sites.  Check out the "resources" section in particular.

    Tobacco Control Resource Center, Inc. & The Tobacco Products Liability Project
    Information about legal suits involving the tobacco industry with access to case briefs. In addition, the Tobacco Control Resource Center has released its Analysis of the Multistate Settlement Agreement (MSA). This analysis includes information about the MSA's specific terms and provisions, highlighting its benefits and weaknesses.

    Tobacco Use Prevention Training Institute
    The Tobacco Use Prevention Training Institute (TUPTI), sponsored by the University of North Carolina, has been held annually for the past six years. The most recent training session was held from September 17-22, 2000 in Denver, Colorado.

    Rural Community Development

    Strom Thurmond Institute of Government and Public Affairs
    The Strom Thurmond Institute, drawing on expertise from Clemson University, conducts public policy research in South Carolina.  It also convenes and facilitates the South Carolina Tobacco Forum.

    Carl Vinson Institute of Government (CVIOG)
    Institute that focuses on public policy analysis and public education efforts regarding all aspects of government policymaking. Resources include a range of publications and mediation tools.

    Southern Growth Policies Board
    This is a non-profit fifteen-state organization charged with creating strategies for economic development in the south. The site also provides links to other community development pages and a Regional Economic Development Database.

    Rural Advancement Foundation International - USA
    This foundation focuses on enhancing community, equity, and diversity in agriculture. Their Tobacco Communities Project is a four year old effort to help tobacco farmers and rural communities in North Carolina adjust to changes in tobacco markets.

    W.K. Kellogg Collection of Rural Development Resources
    Provided by the Heartland Center for Leadership Development, this Collection represents a wide range of online rural community development resources, including guidebooks, manuals, reports and workshop materials.

    Rural Policy Research Institute (RUPRI)
    RUPRI facilitates dialogue concerning public policy's effects in rural communities in the United States.

    Mountain Association for Community Economic Development (MACED)
    MACED provides opportunities and resources to help citizens build healthy, sustainable, equitable, democratic and prosperous communities in Kentucky and Central Appalachia.

    Burley Tobacco Growers Cooperative Association
    This association monitors the tobacco price support program in Kentucky, Ohio, Indiana, Missouri, and West Virginia and provides annual quota and pricing data for each state.

    Southern Rural Development Center (SRDC)
    The SRDC, located at Mississippi State, is one of four USDA-sponsored regional centers in the United States. The SRDC supports research and extension efforts to improve the lives of people living in non-metropolitan areas. The site provides extensive rural development links. The other centers are the North Central Regional Center for Rural Development, located at Iowa State, the Western Rural Development Center, located at Utah State University, and the Northeast Regional Center for Rural Development, located at Penn State.
