The Institute for Global Policy Research [IGPR] was formally established in 1998 with Amb. Nathaniel Howell as Director and Prof. Allen Lynch, Director, Center for Russian and East European Studies, as Deputy Director. The objectives of the Institute are to serve as a framework for interdisciplinary programs concerned with issues of public policy around the world and provide a catalyst for developing innovative approaches to global problems. At the present, the Institute includes four integral elements:
and two affiliated University programs:Arabian Peninsula & Gulf Studies Program [APAG] Center for Turkish & Turkic Studies Program on Leadership Studies for Keeping the Peace Critical Incident Analysis Group [CIAG] It is anticipated that, as the Institute develops, additional programs will be added.Center for Russian and East European Studies Nuclear Nonproliferation Verification Institute Institute programs, which include Faculty from Arts & Sciences, the Schools of Law, Medicine, Nursing, Engineering, and the Darden School, as well as non-University associates, stress interdisciplinary approaches to contemporary issues an problems. These include ethnic and "tribal" conflict, instruments and techniques of international and inter-group relations, and the role of technology, trade and development in shaping the global environment. A related characteristic of the Institute is the emphasis on practical issues faced by the policy-maker. The mix of scholars and former government, military and diplomatic officials, facilitates research and projects with relevance to real-world crises and issues. Finally, the Institute is organized to ensure maximum flexibility and innovation, permitting individual components to function autonomously or to combine as appropriate to conduct self-generated activities or to undertake sponsored research, conferences and cooperation with other U.S. or international Institutions.
