Intramural-Recreational Sports is accepting applications for
lifeguards at the AFC pool and various aquatic programs. Want
to become a Lifeguard? Learn about our Lifeguard
Training certification programs.
Joining the UVA lifeguard team is a great way to maintain your skills,
meet new people, earn money, and have fun. Students who are interested
in applying for a position can apply here. The application should be completed with attached copies of certifications
and returned to the Intramural-Recreational Department Business Office
at the Aquatic and Fitness Center.
Lifeguards typically log 10-20 hours per week, current Red Cross lifeguard training, CPR for the Professional Rescuer, First Aid certifications are required. Certification in Automated External Defibrillator and Oxygen Administration preferred but not required. Good skills, attitude and customer service required. Varied hours. Wage: Starting at $7.50 per hour.
Candidates must be able to:
swim 500 yards continuously using the front crawl and breaststroke
swim 20 yards using the front crawl or breaststroke
surface dive to a depth of 7-10 feet, retrieve a 10 pound object,return to the surface and swim 20 yards back to the starting point with the object.
demonstrate high skill level in swimming, approaches, carries, resuscitation, assists and victim removal
enforce specific pool and safety rules
All lifeguard applicants must possess current certification in American Red Cross Lifeguard Training and First Aid. Copies of these certifications must be included with the employment application form.
