Club Sports Descriptions
Aquatics (Indoor/Outdoor)The Sailing Association at UVA allows University students to participate in recreational sailing and intercollegiate racing. We own eight sailboats and a small motorboat. The sailing team is a member of The Mid-Atlantic Intercollegiate Sailing Association (MAISA), allowing us to compete with some of the best varsity and club sailing programs in the US. We sail at Lake Anna every Friday afternoon-weather permitting. We also attend regattas during the Fall and Spring seasons. The Virginia Diving Club is a coached, non-competitive club open to all levels of experience. Practices are held at the AFC throughout the school year. Members use both one and three meter springboards. Whether you are interested in learning new dives or just love to do cannonballs, the diving club is for you! The Virginia Rowing Association is the Men’s Club Crew Team at UVA. Although we are a club program, we compete against all of the top programs in the nation. We row on the Rivanna River out of the Thomas Allen Boathouse. The Virginia Swimming Club, otherwise known as the "Wet Wahoo's," strives to provide a competitive yet relaxed atmosphere for those who desire to continue swimming for fitness, competition, and camaraderie. The club sports its own inventory of pull-buoys and kick boards and has five practices a week. Practices and participation in extra events are encouraged but not mandatory. The Club swims three meets per semester on average against other collegiate clubs such as University of Maryland, William & Mary, and Clemson.
Baseball/SoftballClub Softball is composed of students interested in playing competitive fast-pitch softball. Tournaments and games are played with other colleges throughout the year. Tryouts are held at the beginning of each fall semester. Practice is held two times per week with games and tournaments on the weekends. The Virginia Baseball Club is the perfect opportunity for high school ball players to take their game to the next level. Although the emphasis is on having fun, the team competes seriously in the National Club Baseball Association.
BasketballWomen’s Club Basketball at UVA is a group of 12-16 talented players who are dedicated to the game and love to compete. Our schedule includes other club teams as well as Division II and III schools and nationally ranked junior colleges. We travel up and down the East Coast and in the past have made trips to Florida and Arizona. In the six seasons since our foundation we have established a tradition of winning and are looking for girls who are willing to put in the time and effort to continue this success, while having a lot of fun along the way. Tryouts are held at the beginning of the fall semester.
Dance/Performance
The Ballroom Dance Club at UVA promotes ballroom dancing on and off Grounds,
socially and competitively. The club also includes performing Standard
and Latin formation teams. Professional instruction is offered in various
levels. We dance all ballroom dances: smooth, Latin, rhythm and swing.
Membership is open to all students, faculty, and staff of the University
regardless of prior dance The Belly Dance Club at UVA provides students with the opportunity to learn belly dancing through proper instruction and participate in performances open to the community. The type of belly dance taught is Turkish tribal style, although other styles such as cabaret and Egyptian are also incorporated. This is for anyone who likes to dance and is interested in learning not only about this particular style of dance, but also the history that shapes it. So come out and shake it! It’s definitely an experience unlike any other club sport. Etcetera Winterguard is a performance organization where members make use of their artistic imaginations and rhythmic abilities in the interpretation of music through the medium of dance and use of props and equipment. Competitive seasons last from September–March. The Mahogany Dance Troupe seeks to promote the artistic expression of African and African-American dance. The group is comprised of women who wish to educate others about the fundamentals of African and African-American dance. Students of all ability levels are encouraged to join. The Rhapsody Dance Ensemble focuses on ballet, modern and contemporary dance. We perform on and off grounds providing opportunities for original student choreography. In addition, we offer higher-level technique classes that are open to the entire University community. The ensemble consists of approximately 20 dancers. Auditions take place at the beginning of every semester. Swing Club at UVA The University Dance Club’s motto is "dance for the love of dance" and that’s what we do! We offer both performing and non-performing classes in the areas of hip-hop, jazz, modern, lyrical, and ballet. Our club membership usually ranges from 100-140 members and we hold tryouts at the beginning of each semester. The Virginia Dance Company specializes in all areas of dance including jazz, ballet, hip-hop, lyrical, modern and tap. The company consists of 30-40 girls who perform numerous times during the semester around Grounds and the Charlottesville community. The company performs at the end of each semester, showcasing the student-choreographed dances from that semester. Auditions are held approximately one week after each semester begins. HockeyMen’s Ice Hockey Club is a competitive hockey program that competes in the ACCHL. We have won the regular season title four out of five years and won the ACCHL championship two of those four years. The Women's Ice Hockey at UVA is making their presence known in Virginia and along the East Coast against collegiate and women's teams. We are a very energetic group with the desire to become more competitive. We are looking for anyone who has an interest in hockey and knows how to skate. The Virginia Club Field Hockey gives University students the opportunity to play extramural field hockey while enjoying the benefits of a relaxed and social environment. We compete against college club teams in Virginia, Maryland and North Carolina.
LacrosseThe Men’s Club Lacrosse is a member of the National College Lacrosse League. We play throughout the school year against teams all along the East Coast. We welcome any UVA student to participate in our relaxed but competitive lacrosse team.
Martial Arts/GymnasticsAkido Club at UVa Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a martial arts technique evolved
from ancient Japanese Jiu-jitsu. It focuses on techniques of self defense
at close
quarter combat. It’s widely regarded throughout the world as the
priemere dominant fighting style in the mix martial arts community. We
train in a safe and efficient manner of utilizing various forms of submission
and joint locks to subdue an attacker when he’s too close for standard
punches and kicks. Beginners and advanced are encouraged to join the
club,
held in an informal friendly atmosphere. ISKF Karate Club offers year-round classes in traditional Japanese Shotokan karate. Students learn and develop blocking and striking techniques, forms and sparring, with an emphasis on strong basic techniques and body connection. Benefits include self-discipline, self-defense, and physical and mental development. Member Japan Karate Association. Kumdo Club The Myo Sim Karate Club has been at the University for over 30 years, teaching a Korean form of karate called Myo Sim. The system is designed to teach the students kata, sparring, and self-defense. The classes are taught in a traditional atmosphere. Both beginners and advanced students are encouraged to join. Tae Kwon Do Club at UVA is a Korean martial art and Olympic sport that is a proven means of self-defense and physical fitness. Tae Kwon Do teaches the skilled application of punches, kicks, and blocks that result in precision defensive and offensive maneuvers. The ultimate goal of Tae Kwon Do training is self-improvement through the discipline of the mind and the conditioning of the body. Uechi-Ryu is based in the Chinese and Okinawan traditions of martial arts, with both "soft" or evasive techniques, and crushing "hard" techniques. It also emphasizes the development of power through stance and chi, and strategies for real-life self-defense. The Virginia Gymnastics Club is a co-rec club that
enjoys the challenges of gymnastics. We welcome students of all levels:
beginners to seasoned competitors. The club works out at a well-equipped
private gym, and holds an exhibition in the spring of each year. Members
compete in meets with other club teams across the nation.
Racquet SportsVirginia Club Badminton provides an opportunity for University students to play badminton both recreationally and competitively. Virginia Squash Team aims to foster an appreciation of the sport and to increase participation. Squash is an action packed game simular to racquetball. We play on American style courts, practicing strokes and learning the rules of the game. Virginia Men’s Tennis Club offers students of all abilities the opportunity to play tennis. The club is made up of two ladders: groups A and B. The A ladder is structured as a competitive team that can be reached through challenge matches. Matches are scheduled with other universities and local groups.
RugbyThe Virginia Men’s Rugby Club provides undergraduates the opportunity to play rugby on a competitive collegiate level against some of the best teams on the East Coast. The club serves an athletic and social function for its members and welcomes all levels of experience. The Virginia Women’s Rugby Football Club is a fun yet competitive team that plays fall and spring semester schedules. We play in-state rivals, such as JMU and W&M, and compete on a national level. We’ve competed in the elite eights three years running. We welcome anyone interested in playing: no experience necessary or expected.

Ultimate FrisbeeThe Virginia Men’s Ultimate Frisbee Club plays competitive Ultimate Frisbee at the collegiate club level. Activities include going to tournaments, regular practices and intense local scrimmages. Women’s Ultimate Frisbee is a competitive club that participates in frisbee games against neighboring schools and in frisbee tournaments throughout the year. We hold practices three times a week with an open scrimmage on Sundays. The club welcomes any student with an interest in the game to come out and play.
Everything ElseAlbemarle County Foosball Association. From the German word for football, 'fuball'. Also known as 'table soccer', foosball is a sport which requires wrist strength, hand-eye coordination, manual dexterity, quick thinking and reflexes, strategy, and teamwork. It is a fun sport for all - easy to learn yet challenging to master. The Archery Club at UVA is a recreational club for those interested in learning or honing archery skills. The club furnishes all necessary equipment (including both compound and recurve bows) providing opportunities to keep in form for hunting season, shoot in regional tournaments, or just to have fun. The Cavalier Road Runners seek to bring together runners of all abilities. Meeting together gives runners a chance to support one another and enjoy running as a group. There’s room for all types: from casual joggers to race-hungry competitors.
Olympiclifting and Powerlifting Team Rifle and Pistol Club The Virginia Alpine Ski Team (VAST) is open to all students who are interested in sking and snowboarding and have prior experience. VAST is a member of the Southeastern Collegiate Ski Conference (SCSC), which is part of the United States Collegiate Snowsport Association (USCSA). VAST benefits from having veteran ski racers on the team who provide continuing coaching, instruction, equipment, and tuning advice to other members of the Ski Team. The Virginia Fencing Club’s purpose is to perpetuate the art of fencing through daily practice and instruction, which allows students to compete at an intercollegiate level. Safety is assured and no one is asked to push beyond their physical limit. We provide all members with necessary equipment. Special provisions for beginners are made at the start of each semester. The Virginia Golf Club provides an opportunity for non-varsity level competition as well as an outlet for those who love to golf or want to play better. We are a new club hoping to compete against regional and ACC club sports teams in addition to UVA-wide competition. The club provides a social, competitive, and instructive atmosphere. Virginia Polo Virginia Snowboard Club promotes friendly completion while working on both racing and aggressive snowboard skills. The general club is open to boarders of all skill levels, with the goal of improving individual's snowboarding abilities while organizing transportation to local ski resorts. A core team of individuals also comprises a club sport boardercross/freestyle team, competing at resorts along the east coast. Aggressive skiers are also welcomed to the club and competitive team within the Virginia Snowboard club.
