| The grand opening of the
Aquatic & Fitness Center in 1996 marked a new era for Intramural-Recreational
Sports. Measuring at 98,500 square feet, the AFC more than doubled
the space dedicated to fitness on Grounds and added a new Olympic-size
pool to the Department's aquatic
facilities. The AFC was awarded the NIRSA Outstanding
Sports Facility Award for 2005. Read

- a variety of state-of-the-art cardiovascular training equipment,
including circuit trainers, ellipticals, bikes, treadmills, and
free weights
- a warm-water pool and sauna
- a "wet classroom" for aquatic classes
- group exercise rooms
- "TJ's Locker" retails store (a division of the UVA Bookstore)
- "Poolside Cafe" eatery (a division of Dining Services)
- fitness assessment and training areas
- towel service and locker rental available
- a 3-court gymnasium
- an indoor walking/running track
- a cycling room
- massage therapy center

Membership ID is required
for equipment checkout, and will be held until the equipment is
returned. An equipment checkout form must be completed and signed
indicating that the individual is responsible for all equipment
checked out, and will pay the replacement cost for lost, stolen
or damaged equipment.
