
The Intramural-Recreational (IM-Rec) Sports Department proudly welcomes you to the Intramural Sports Program. The Intramural Sports Program strives to meet the mission of the Department and the University by offering a variety of activities throughout the year. Participants take the court/field over 15,000 times a year while competing in various Intramural activities. It takes over 150 student employees to supervise and officiate the numerous Intramural contests we offer. We strive to make your experience in Intramural Sports an enjoyable one. Participation in the Intramural Sports Program is completely voluntary. Individuals participate at their own risk and absolve the University of Virginia of responsibility for any injuries incurred during the activity. All individuals should be in good physical condition. Participants are encouraged to provide their own health insurance and to receive a health examination yearly.
All participants must wear shoes. For outdoor sports, rubber cleated shoes and screw-in cleats will be allowed. Metal cleats of any kind, open heel and/or toe shoes are prohibited. For indoor sports, court shoes must be worn. Any item deemed to be dangerous by the Intramural Supervisor may not be worn during a game.
All types of jewelry (aside from medical bracelets) are prohibited in every sport - no exceptions.
Men's - Teams consist mainly of male students, faculty, staff and spouses. Females may participate in this league.
Dormitory - Teams may consist of male and/or female 1st Year students and staff who reside in the a UVA dorm. The dorm name must be included in the team’s name and all players must live in that dorm.
Fraternity - Fraternities registered with the Dean of Students Office may compete in the Fraternity League. Teams may consist of the full-time UVA students (minimum 12 credit hours) that are listed on the charter in the Inter-Fraternity Council Office. Full-time grad students can participate in the league if they were an undergraduate member of the fraternity at UVA.
Women's - Teams may consist of female students, faculty, staff, and spouses.
Co-Rec - Teams may consist of students, faculty, staff, and spouses. Teams are required to have both male and female participants.
Divisions - Most Men's and CoRec Leagues will now be featuring Competitive and Recreational Divisions. Competitive divisions are geared toward experienced participants who are looking for more challenge game play. Recreational divisions are geared towards participants who playing with a ‘just for fun’ mentality. All Varsity Athletes must always compete in the Competitive Division, and club athletes participating in their associated sport must also compete in the Competitive Division. Restrictions of the number of club athletes participating in associated sports still applies.
The Free Agent List is designed to aid those interested in participating in a particular sport who are lacking a partner or team with which to play. Participants searching for additional interested players to complete their team can also utilize the list.
Individuals who do not have a team are encouraged to join the Free Agent's List. Free Agents may also create their own team. Team captains are responsible for the eligibility of players used from the Free Agent List. Go to the Intramural homepage for Free Agent details.
The IM-Rec Sports Department assesses the following charges
for participation in Intramural activities. All entry fees are payable
by check, cash, or credit (MasterCard or Visa) at the time of entry.
Team Sport Leagues = $50/team
Team Sport Tournaments = $35/team
Individual/Dual Sports = $10 or $20/entry
Summer IM Leagues = $60/team
Faculty/Staff/Student Softball
League = $200/team
Team captains and participants are responsible for knowing their team’s schedule. Generally, teams participating in leagues register in a four or six team division and play a three-week regular season. In most cases, teams play their regular season contests on the same day throughout the three-week regular season. Scheduling information will be posted on the IM-Rec Sports Department’s web page at www.virginia.edu/ims/imsports and at a sport’s particular site.
Student Officials and Supervisors are hired to work for the IM-Rec Sports Department’s Intramural Program. The essential qualities for all employees are dependability, self-confidence, a willingness to learn the rules, and the ability to communicate tactfully with participants. Training clinics and scrimmages are held prior to the start of each sport season. Champion T-shirts are awarded to the All-University
Champions of each sport (teams may receive up to but no more than twice
the amount of players required to field a team). A photo of each All-University
Championship Team will also be displayed on the Intramural
Wall of Fame,
which is located on our website and in the Aquatic & Fitness Center.
