Intramural Highpoint Championship System

Philosophy

The Highpoint Championships are designed to reward athletic and sportsmanship excellence in a variety of sports. The scoring system is based on the idea that the team is more important than the individual. Ideally, the victors will be the organizations that are best able to make use of their team members in an environment of friendly, yet serious, competition.

Participating in the Highpoint Championships is a choice. You do not have to participate in the Highpoint Championships to participate in the intramural program. The points systems simply enhance the intramural experience for those individuals choosing to participate in a wide variety of intramural activities.

How the Point System Works

Throughout the year, Championship Points are awarded to the top four teams in each division. In addition to Championship Points, Participation Points may also be earned.

At the end of the year, the organization accumulating the highest point total in each division (Dormitory, Fraternity, Independent, Women's) will be awarded the Highpoint Championship. The Highpoint Champions in each division will each receive up to 30 pairs of "Highpoint Champion" mesh shorts and will have their organization's name displayed on the Intramural Wall of Fame, located both online and in the Aquatic & Fitness Center .

Important Definition

For the purposes of this information, and to avoid potential confusion, the word “ organization” will be used to identify Dormitory, Fraternity, Independent, and Women's teams. Point totals will be accumulated under organization names. An example of an organization may be “Malone Fighting Fish” or “ Fiji A”.

Women's and Sorority teams will be grouped into the same rankings for the purpose of the Highpoint Championships. This ranking group will be entitled “Women's”.

Eligibility Requirements

An organization may enter more than one team per sport. For example, “Alpha Phi” may enter teams Alpha Phi A, Alpha Phi B, and Alpha Phi C. However, only one team from each organization will be eligible to earn Championship Points in each sport. Each organization must designate which of their teams is eligible to earn Championship Points prior to the first competition of the season.

All participants on the team must be eligible members of the organization that they are representing in order for their team to receive points. In the case of Independent teams, all members must be full time University of Virginia students, faculty, staff, and/or spouses, and the team must play under the same name for the entire year to be considered eligible for the Highpoint Championship.

Although multiple teams from the same organization cannot earn Championship Points, they remain eligible to earn Participation Points and suffer Point Deduction, as outlined below. These points will count toward the overall point total of the organization. For example, “Spider Monkeys A” may compete for Championship Points, while “Spider Monkeys B” simultaneously earns Participation Points, thus contributing to the point total for the entire “Spider Monkeys” organization.

CoRec teams are not eligible for the Highpoint Championships. Only Dormitory, Fraternity, Independent, and Women's teams are eligible.

Things to Remember

  • When signing up for an event, make sure that your team name reflects the organization that you are representing.
  • To qualify for points, teams and individuals must affiliate themselves with an organization prior to the start of play.
  • All participants must be eligible members of the organization that they are representing.
  • Only one team from each organization will be eligible for Championship Points.
  • Individual/Dual DQ due to sportsmanship 100 points

Highpoint Scoring System

The academic year will be divided into fall and spring semesters. Championship Points will be awarded to the top four teams from each division, for each Class I and Class II Sport. Championship Points earned in Class I Sports have a greater value than those earned in Class II Sports.

Class I and Class II Sports for the fall semester are as follows:

Fall Class I Sports:
  • Outdoor Soccer
  • 7on7 Flag Football

    Fall Class II Sports:
  • Floor Hockey
  • Wallyball
  • 3on3 Basketball

Class I and Class II Sports for the spring semester are as follows:

Spring Class I Sports:
  • 5on5 Basketball
  • Volleyball
  • Softball

    Spring Class II Sports:
  • 4on4 Flag Football
  • Indoor Soccer
  • Ultimate Frisbee
  • Kickball

Points awarded as follows:

Class I Sports : Class II Sports:

  • Playoff Champion -300 points Playoff Champion -150 points
  • Playoff Runner up -225 points Playoff Runner up -115 points
  • Quarterfinalist #1 -125 points Quarterfinalist #1 -60 points
  • Quarterfinalist #2 -125 points Quarterfinalist #2 -60 points

The organization winning the division playoff championship will be awarded the Champion points, with the Runner up, Quarterfinalist #1, and Quarterfinalist #2 organizations following accordingly.

Participation Points:

The maximum number of participation points each organization can earn is 300. The number of participation points is capped to limit any potential unfair advantages that organizations with large memberships may gain over those organizations with small memberships. If an organization has multiple teams, all teams not eligible for Championship Points will remain eligible for Participation Points.

Participation Points Awarded for Team Events:

  • Each team entered into a Class I Sport 20 points
  • Each team entered into a Class II Sport 10 points
  • Captains' Meeting attendance 5 points
  • Quarterfinalist #2 -125 points Quarterfinalist #2 -60 points

Participation Points Awarded for Individual & Dual Events:

  • Tennis Singles 5 points per participant
  • Golf Singles 5 points per participant
  • Family Weekend 5k 5 points per participant
  • Pickleball 10 points per team
  • Racquetball Doubles 10 points per team
  • Table Tennis 5 points per participant
  • Wrestling 5 points per participant
  • Three Point 5 points per participant
  • Free Throw 5 points per participant

The maximum number of Individual/Dual Participation points that one organization can accumulate from one activity is 50. For example, if 15 members of one organization competed in the Free Throw Contest, 50 points would be awarded to that organization.

Points Deducted for the Following:

  • All-University Game forfeit 300 points
  • First game forfeit in a team sport 100 points
  • Any other forfeit in a team sport 75 points per forfeit
  • Forfeit in an individual/dual event 25 points per forfeit
  • Team disqualification due to sportsmanship 300 points
  • Individual/Dual DQ due to sportsmanship 100 points
  • “3” sportsmanship rating 25 points
  • “2” sportsmanship rating 50 points
  • “1” sportsmanship rating 100 points
  • “0” sportsmanship rating (other than forfeit) 200 points

Organizations will not have points deducted for concessions, as long as our policies regarding concessions are followed.

Organizations may have points deducted for multiple violations by the same team in the same sport, by different teams in the same sport, or by different teams in different sports. For example, if “McLovin' A” forfeits the first game of Outdoor Soccer and verbally abuses a referee, they will have 600 points deducted (100 points for the forfeit, 200 for the “0” rating, and 300 for the team DQ). If at the same time, “McLovin' B” receives a “3” sportsmanship rating during their game, they will have 25 points deducted. Therefore, the overall point deduction for the “McLovin'” organization will be 625 points.

The Intramural-Recreational Sports Department places high values on sportsmanship and overall responsibility. These values are reflected in the Highpoint Championships, as forfeits and poor sportsmanship will have a severe negative impact on the number of points that your organization may earn.

Good luck!
