The Highpoint Championships are designed to reward athletic and sportsmanship excellence in a variety of sports. The scoring system is based on the idea that the team is more important than the individual. Ideally, the victors will be the organizations that are best able to make use of their team members in an environment of friendly, yet serious, competition.
Participating in the Highpoint Championships is a choice. You do not have to participate in the Highpoint Championships to participate in the intramural program. The points systems simply enhance the intramural experience for those individuals choosing to participate in a wide variety of intramural activities.
Throughout the year, Championship Points are awarded to the top four teams in each division. In addition to Championship Points, Participation Points may also be earned.
At the end of the year, the organization accumulating the highest point total in each division (Dormitory, Fraternity, Independent, Women's) will be awarded the Highpoint Championship. The Highpoint Champions in each division will each receive up to 30 pairs of "Highpoint Champion" mesh shorts and will have their organization's name displayed on the Intramural Wall of Fame, located both online and in the Aquatic & Fitness Center .
For the purposes of this information, and to avoid potential confusion, the word “ organization” will be used to identify Dormitory, Fraternity, Independent, and Women's teams. Point totals will be accumulated under organization names. An example of an organization may be “Malone Fighting Fish” or “ Fiji A”.
Women's and Sorority teams will be grouped into the same rankings for the purpose of the Highpoint Championships. This ranking group will be entitled “Women's”.
An organization may enter more than one team per sport. For example, “Alpha Phi” may enter teams Alpha Phi A, Alpha Phi B, and Alpha Phi C. However, only one team from each organization will be eligible to earn Championship Points in each sport. Each organization must designate which of their teams is eligible to earn Championship Points prior to the first competition of the season.
All participants on the team must be eligible members of the organization that they are representing in order for their team to receive points. In the case of Independent teams, all members must be full time University of Virginia students, faculty, staff, and/or spouses, and the team must play under the same name for the entire year to be considered eligible for the Highpoint Championship.
Although multiple teams from the same organization cannot earn Championship Points, they remain eligible to earn Participation Points and suffer Point Deduction, as outlined below. These points will count toward the overall point total of the organization. For example, “Spider Monkeys A” may compete for Championship Points, while “Spider Monkeys B” simultaneously earns Participation Points, thus contributing to the point total for the entire “Spider Monkeys” organization.
CoRec teams are not eligible for the Highpoint Championships. Only Dormitory, Fraternity, Independent, and Women's teams are eligible.

The academic year will be divided into fall and spring semesters. Championship Points will be awarded to the top four teams from each division, for each Class I and Class II Sport. Championship Points earned in Class I Sports have a greater value than those earned in Class II Sports.
Class I Sports : Class II Sports:
The organization winning the division playoff championship will be awarded the Champion points, with the Runner up, Quarterfinalist #1, and Quarterfinalist #2 organizations following accordingly.
The maximum number of participation points each organization can earn is 300. The number of participation points is capped to limit any potential unfair advantages that organizations with large memberships may gain over those organizations with small memberships. If an organization has multiple teams, all teams not eligible for Championship Points will remain eligible for Participation Points.
Participation Points Awarded for Team Events:
The maximum number of Individual/Dual Participation points that one organization can accumulate from one activity is 50. For example, if 15 members of one organization competed in the Free Throw Contest, 50 points would be awarded to that organization.
Organizations will not have points deducted for concessions, as long as our policies regarding concessions are followed.
Organizations may have points deducted for multiple violations by the same team in the same sport, by different teams in the same sport, or by different teams in different sports. For example, if “McLovin' A” forfeits the first game of Outdoor Soccer and verbally abuses a referee, they will have 600 points deducted (100 points for the forfeit, 200 for the “0” rating, and 300 for the team DQ). If at the same time, “McLovin' B” receives a “3” sportsmanship rating during their game, they will have 25 points deducted. Therefore, the overall point deduction for the “McLovin'” organization will be 625 points.
The Intramural-Recreational Sports Department places high values on sportsmanship and overall responsibility. These values are reflected in the Highpoint Championships, as forfeits and poor sportsmanship will have a severe negative impact on the number of points that your organization may earn.
Good luck!
