Dance Sampler
This course will teach the basic steps of 3 styles of partner dancing
which are often seen at local dances: East
Coast Swing, Nightclub 2-Step and West Coast Swing. We'll focus on lead-follow technique
and recognizing styles of dances by the music. By the end of the
course, you'll be able to dance socially at the various venues
in Charlottesville. Practice music will be provided!

Breakdancing:
Beginner
This class will explore the basic moves of breaking:
Top Rock, Six-step, and basic Freezes. The first class consists of
an orientation, including a video and explanation of the origins
of this dance and its place in the hip hop culture. Flexible shoes,
long pants and knee protection recommended. These challenging, super-fun
moves will build upper and lower body strength, flexibility, rhythm
and coordination. As the semester progresses, participants will explore
power moves, footwork (floor text) and some hip hop dance. (10 classes)

Social
Dance
This course will teach the basic steps of several social dances, including the
Waltz, Rumba, Swing, Tango, Salsa, and Cha-cha. We will also focus on dancing
with a partner and recognizing styles of dances by the music. By the end of the
six weeks, one would be able to dance socially at any of the various venues in
Charlottesville.

West
Coast Swing (not currently offered)
Learn the new, fun dance that is sweeping the nation. Dance to some
of the hottest new songs by R&B, Hip-Hop, Funk, Blues, and Pop
artists. This course will cover the basics of West Coast
Swing so you can WOW the crowd dancing with your friends. (8 classes)

Ballet (not
currently offered)
This class is ideal for the beginner or the more experienced dancer who
wants to get back to the basics! Participants will learn basic ballet
techniques with a barre warm-up, terminology review, center work including
classical adagios and allegros and short simple combinations across
the floor. No experience is necessary. We will have fun while building
core strength and flexibility. Ballet shoes are preferred, but not
required. Please wear clothing conducive to ballet or yoga classes

Hip
Hop Style (not currently offered)
Harlem shake. Krumping. Shoulder lean. In this 10-week class, learn the basics
of hip hop choreography and style while having fun and getting a great work out.
This class familiarizes the participant with the fundamental ideas of Hip Hop
Style dancing and builds on the dancer’s fundamental abilities. No prior
dance experience is necessary. Wear comfortable clothing and sneakers or jazz
shoes. (10 classes)

Just
Want to Dance (not currently offered)
Have you ever heard a song that just made you want to dance? Have you ever watched
a dance team competition and wished you could move like that? Do you want to
learn some fun hip-hop moves and some funky dance routines? Then this class is
for you! Prior dance experience is not mandatory; all you need are sneakers,
gym clothes and a desire to DANCE! (10 classes)

Salsa
Dance (not currently offered)
Learn how to Salsa Dance! It is a fun social dance that is becoming
more popular everyday. Participants will learn about rhythm and timing
of the music, basic footwork, basic turn patterns, the basics of following,
leading and most importantly about salsa dance! Each class will be filled
with good music and hot moves. (10 classes)

Jazz (not
currently offered)
Learn the basics of jazz dancing as well as more advanced techniques and focus
on developing flexibility and strength needed for dancing. We will also explore
the history of jazz dance and learn different styles such as Fosse and Contemporary.
This class will be a great opportunity to learn new moves as well as correct
technique for this highly active and entertaining form of dance. Have fun and
get a great workout! (10 classes)

Lyrical (not
currently offered)
Lyrical is an expressive form of dance that combines elements of ballet,
jazz and modern dance. Students will learn creative combinations that
attempt to express the emotion of the chosen music. Some ballet experience
recommended but by no means required. (10 classes)

Modern Dance(not currently offered)
Modern dance began in the early 20th century as an alternative to ballet.
It was based in more natural human movement in an attempt to be more expressive.
This class incorporates a simple, energetic style that is ideal for the
beginner, but interesting for all levels of experience. Class begins with
a floor warm up, weight shifting exercises and a short combination across
the floor and ends with work on perfecting a single dance which will be
added to each week. Come in bare feet and be ready to have fun! (10 classes)
Nightclub 2-Step (not currently offered)
One of the easier dances to learn, its smooth rhythmical style makes it
a winning choice for dancing to slow music. Can be danced to a variety
of music including modern R&B, country and contemporary.
