U.Va. Inaugural Walk

5K/10K Walk sanctioned by the American Volkssport Association

The Cavalier Volkssporting Club cordially invites all walkers to Charlottesville, on Sunday, April 17, for the Inaugural Walk, which will mark this club’s first event and also the inauguration of the University of Virginia’s eighth President, Teresa A. Sullivan. Two walks, 5K and 10K, will traverse the historic Grounds of the University of Virginia, which was founded by Thomas Jefferson in 1819.

Both trails will begin in The Park in the University’s North Grounds, and will include scenic and historic features. The 10K will pass through Mr. Jefferson’s Academical Village, offering views of the Rotunda, the Pavilion Gardens, the Serpentine Walls, the historic Chapel, Lambeth Field and Colonnade, the University of Virginia Art Museum, and the Confederate and University cemeteries. Both trails will pass the U.S. Army’s JAG School, the Darden School of Business, and the Law School. Most of the trails consist of paved surface with a small section of gravel trail. The 5K walk is rated 1 with a 580-foot elevation change. The 10K walk is rated 2 for one long hill that contains a 1,023-foot elevation change. Both trails will be accessible to strollers and wheelchairs with one minor modification on the 10k trail.

The start-time window will be 9 a.m.-1 p.m., with finish by 4 p.m. (light refreshments will be available). The Atlantic Region Meeting of the American Volkssport Association and election of the Atlantic Region Director will begin at 1:30 p.m., in the North Grounds Recreation Center near the start point, and all are invited to attend.
