Students, Scholars, Leaders: The Academic Lives of the University of Virginia’s Presidents
In celebration of the inauguration of President Teresa A. Sullivan as the eighth president of the University, the Special Collections Library presents an exhibition of materials that focuses on the presidents’ academic backgrounds and how their views of education and scholarship influenced their tenures at the University.
Items are drawn from the University Archives, including the first minute book of the Board of Visitors and the University mace, and from the rare books, manuscripts, and photographic holdings of Special Collections. Highlights include: Edwin Alderman’s handwritten speech before a joint session of Congress in 1924; Edgar Shannon’s speech to protesting students in 1970; and Teresa Sullivan’s high school yearbook.
