Fire relocates treasurer's
office
An early morning fire Sept. 7 heavily damaged the University
Treasurer's office on Old Ivy Road, forcing the office to relocate.
The cause of the fire was not determined and an investigation is
ongoing, said county spokesperson Lee Catlin.
A
county police officer responded to a burglar alarm at the Montesano
building at 233 Old Ivy Road shortly after midnight. Smelling smoke
upon his arrival, he called in the fire department. Units from the
county's Seminole Trail station and from the city arrived on the
scene around 12:30 a.m. and extinguished the fire within 30 minutes,
Catlin said.
Damage,
mostly from heat and smoke, was largely contained to the treasurer's
office. Officials would not put a dollar amount on the damages until
they could determine if any of the affected computer data was recoverable,
Catlin said.
The
treasurer's office had been slated to relocate to the Fontaine Research
Park next month, said Rick Schupp, director of U.Va.'s Office of
Risk Management. It will temporarily be housed at the former PRA
Building on Old Ivy Road until its new quarters are ready.
The
University Real Estate Foundation, which owns Montesano and has
its offices there, suffered little damage and remained open Tuesday.
