The meat of this site -- just one small eddy in the sprawling (and fascinating) American Studies web complex -- is 13 Depression-era narratives about slave life, gathered from former slaves as part of a Works Projects Administration oral history project. The site, designed by Bruce Fort, who recently completed his Ph.D. in History at U.Va., also includes photos of the former slaves and audio links to selected excerpts of the WPA tapes.
