Name: Edward "Ted" A. Snyder

Born: July 3, 1953, Lewisburg, Pa.

Education: Colby College, B.A.; University of Chicago, M.A., University of Chicago, Ph.D. in Economics.

Career: U.S. Department of Justice, Antitrust Division, economist, 1978-82; University of Michigan Business School, from lecturer to professor, 1982-94, director, Davidson Institute, 1992-95, and senior associate dean, 1996-98.

Family: Wife, Kimberly M. Snyder; Children, Alison, 11; Jeff, 8; Kevin, 5 -- "going on 14."

Hobbies: "When we moved here, we put up a basketball hoop with a crank on it, so I could dial it down from 10 feet. Even at 46, I can still dunk the ball. It's very therapeutic."

Travel: Lots of it. Among the most interesting places was Bangalore, India.
