Jones and Thorner named to academy

U.Va. professors Anita K. Jones and Dr. Michael O. Thorner were among 154 fellows elected this year to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. Jones, a University Professor and professor of computer science in the School of Engineering and Applied Science, chairs the University's Virginia 2020 Science and Technology Planning Commission. She served in the Department of Defense during President Clinton's first term.

Thorner, the Henry B. Mulholland Professor of Internal Medicine, chairs the internal medicine department. His current research examines the control of growth hormone in the pituitary gland. [See article on Growth researcher awarded $500,000 grant.]

With Jones' and Thorner's membership, the estimated number of U.Va. faculty who are AAAS fellows comes to 26. The academy, which has approximately 4,000 members, recognizes individuals for their achievements in science, scholarship, the arts and public affairs.
