Block leads dean search

Vice President for Research and Public Service Gene D. Block will chair the search committee for a dean of the College and Graduate School of Arts & Sciences, Vice President and Provost Peter W. Low announced this week. Low charged the committee with identifying three candidates "with appropriate academic values who will provide inspirational leadership for the core teaching and scholarly functions of the College and Graduate School."

Other committee members and their affiliations include: Robert C. Chapel (drama chair), Ellen L. Contini-Moravi (anthropology), Robert Fatton Jr. (government and foreign affairs), Chantale Fiebig (third-year student), Chris Gustafson (alumnus), Stephanie E. Johnson (environmental sciences graduate student), Michael H. Levenson (English chair), Farzaneh Milani (Asian and Middle Eastern languages and cultures, studies in women and gender), Steven L. Nock (sociology), Barbara Nolan (English), Brooks Pate (chemistry), Alan Roberts (alumnus), and Robert E. Scott (Law School dean).

The new dean will replace Melvyn P. Leffler, who announced earlier this semester his intention to step down from the post at the end of the current academic year to accept a visiting professorship at Oxford University.
