• H. Dean Watkins, 64, of Monroeton, Pa., died Dec. 9, 2000. He was a former assistant swimming coach at the University.

• Robert Allen Rutland, 78, of Tulsa, Okla., died Dec. 30. He was a U.Va. history faculty member from 1971 until 1987 and editor of the Papers of James Madison from 1971 until 1986. Nine volumes were published under his supervision, in addition to many other books of his own writing.

• Dr. Victor F. Marshall, 87, died Jan. 5. He earned undergraduate and medical degrees at the University, and after a distinguished academic career, returned to Charlottesville and served as a consultant to the urology department at the U.Va. Health Sciences Center.

• Blanche M. Smith, 64, of Charlottesville died Jan. 6. She retired after 36 years of service with the labor and delivery unit at the Medical Center.

• Frances B. Norton, 73, of Charlottesville died Jan. 9. She retired in 1994 after 32 years of service with the University's Judge Advocate General School.

• Jacob B. Shotwell Sr., 75, of Charlottesville, died Jan. 12. He was formerly a member of the U.Va. Police Department assigned to the Judge Advocate General School.

• Lois Simpson Mothes, 79, of Atlanta, died Jan. 14. She was formerly an employee of a U.Va. medical research laboratory.

• Wyatt J. Barber, 57, of Charlottesville, died Jan. 14. He was a retired employee of the Medical Center.

• Dr. Benjamin H. Word Jr., 76, of Albemarle County, died Jan. 15. The recipient of bachelor's, master's and medical degrees from U.Va., he was also a medical resident at University Hospital. He later was also an active volunteer with the U.Va. Medical Alumni Association.

• Geraldine F. Swingler, 78, of Charlottesville, died Jan. 16. She was a former University employee.

• Oscar L. "Toots" Ragland, 98, of Charlottesville, died Jan. 16. He retired from the University Medical Center after 52 years of service.

• Jynetta M. Tomlin of Charlottesville died Jan. 18. She was a retired employee of the University Medical Center. € Charles N. Trader, 76, of Charlottesville, died Jan. 21. He retired as a lab technician at the University.
