The
University has held the Jackson
Davis Collection of African-American educational photos since
1948, but has recently undertaken digitizing them and making them
available on the Web at this site. Davis was a Virginia-born educator
who served as a field agent for the General Education Board in
New York, and often traveled the South between 1910 and 1940,
camera in hand, photographing many of the African-American schools
he visited. In many cases, his pictures are the only surviving
records.
