Those Virginia taxpayers who have been putting off the inevitable can submit their forms directly to the state Department of Taxation via a secured Web site this year. The application, called iFile for Individuals, was developed by the department and American Management Systems, Inc., an international technology consulting firm based in Fairfax. The iFile program allows residents to file and arrange for direct deposit of a refund or pay taxes with check or credit card. There is no charge for filing online and the taxation department said refunds will be deposited faster.

The deadline for filing state taxes is May 1.
