Shugart inducted into Russian science group

H. H. “Hank” Shugart Jr., the W. W. Professor of Environmental Sciences and director of the Global Environmental Change Program at U.Va., was recently inducted into the Russian Academy of Sciences, as a foreign member, at a reception held last month at the Russian Embassy in Washington, D.C. The first foreign scientist to be elected in his field, Shugart was recognized for his collaborative work in the study and modeling of forest ecology.

The Russian Academy of Sciences, established by Peter the Great in 1724, is the oldest and largest scientific organization in Russia and the former Soviet Union.
