Staff Report
President
John T. Casteen III has appointed search committees for two top
positions soon to be vacated, the dean of the Darden
School and the athletics
director.
As
announced previously, C. Ray Smith will serve as chair of the
search committee looking for a new dean to replace Edward A. Snyder,
who is leaving to become dean of the University of Chicagos
business school. Smith also is stepping in as interim dean.
The
committee members are: Susan Chaplinsky, Martin Davidson, James
Freeland and Pat Werhane, all on the Darden faculty, and Donald
Wilkinson, (class of 66), who is on the Darden Board of
Trustees and will become chair in October. A student representative
will be added to the committee in the near future.
Faculty
and staff members who are available in Charlottesville at the
relevant times will be afforded an opportunity to meet with the
finalists before a selection is made, said Peter W. Low,
vice president and
provost, who will serve as an ex officio member.
The
committees goal is to select a dean by the end of the summer.
Earl C. Dudley Jr., a U.Va. law
professor who chairs the Universitys athletics advisory
committee, will head the nine-member search committee appointed
to recommend a replacement for M. Terry Holland, who will step
down as athletics director June 1.
Other
committee members are: Carolyn M. Callahan, professor of education
and faculty representative to the NCAA; Amy D. Cronin, chief of
staff and special assistant to Pres. Casteen; W. Heywood Fralin,
alumnus and member of the Alumni Association Board of Managers;
Charles L. Glazer, alumnus and member of the Board
of Visitors; William W. Harmon, vice president for student
affairs; Jane Miller, associate athletics director; Andrew M.
Virga, alumnus and president of the Virginia Student Aid Foundation;
and Carl P. Zeithaml, dean of the McIntire School of Commerce.
Casteen
will meet with the search committee within the next two weeks
to discuss the job description. He and Leonard W. Sandridge, executive
vice president and chief operating officer, will be available
to the committee in an ex officio capacity.
Holland
will become a special assistant to Casteen, with fund raising
and other responsibilities related to planning for a new arena
and special events center.
